Maravilhas Contemporâneas
Luiz Melodia
1976

Why This Album Matters
Released in 1976, Maravilhas Contemporâneas is the second studio album by singer-songwriter Luiz Melodia and a vital landmark for understanding Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) of the era. Considered one of the greatest Brazilian albums of all time, the work cemented the legendary artist's career, confirming his unquestionable talent in the music scene. The record is an exuberant fusion of Brazilian musical tradition with elements of jazz, funk, and a gentle psychedelia, showcasing Melodia's genius in his compositions and mastery in his vocals. He challenged the boundaries of MPB with elegance, irreverence, and poetry, presenting a work that, even today, sounds modern, vibrant, and essential.
Context
Maravilhas Contemporâneas was released three years after his acclaimed debut album, Pérola Negra, from 1973. While Pérola Negra had already featured arrangements by Arthur Verocai and the participation of top-tier musicians, this second work solidified Luiz Melodia's position as one of Brazil's most relevant artists, during a period when the local music scene was synonymous with excellence.
Recording
The album was produced by Guto Graça Mello and Márcio Antonucci for the Som Livre record label. The recording featured a notable backing band, including Perinho Santana on guitar and sitar, Fredera on guitar, Jamil Joanes on bass, Luiz Carlos Batera on drums, Chico Batera on percussion, and Maurício Einhorn on harmonica. The arrangements were credited to Oberdan Magalhães, Perinho Albuquerque, and Luiz Melodia himself, with Oberdan also contributing alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and flute. Other musicians who participated include Cidinho Teixeira and Tomás Improta on electric pianos, Octávio Brito on Moog synthesiser, and Márcio Montarroyos on trumpet, enriching the record's multifaceted sound.
Songs
The repertoire of Maravilhas Contemporâneas comprises eleven tracks, mostly self-penned by Luiz Melodia, including classics such as the title track "Maravilhas Contemporâneas" and "Congênito". One of the greatest highlights is "Juventude Transviada", which became an immediate success and was widely propagated by being included in the soundtrack of the telenovela Pecado Capital. The track "Baby Rose" is notable for its evolution from cosmic psychedelia, featuring the sitar, to the tranquil beauty of a melodic samba-funk. Meanwhile, "Questão de Posse" incorporates elements of progressive rock ("proggy").
Legacy
Maravilhas Contemporâneas solidified Luiz Melodia's career, being considered a vital album for understanding MPB and worthy of being placed alongside works by great names such as Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil. The album's success was boosted by songs like "Juventude Transviada", which not only became a hit but was also re-recorded by Gal Costa on her 1979 album Gal Tropical. The lasting importance of the record is evidenced by its CD re-releases by Som Livre in 2017 and on LP by Polysom in 2018.
