Why This Album Matters

Tudo Azul, released in 1984, marks Lulu Santos' third studio album, consolidating his presence in the Brazilian music scene with a pop sound and reggae elements. The record stands out for hits like "Último Romântico" and the song "Lua-de-Mel", an engaging reggae with touches of carnival march, which was also re-recorded by Gal Costa. The work is enriched by special appearances from major names in national music, including Rita Lee, Erasmo Carlos and Roberto de Carvalho on the track "Ronca, Ronca", Ritchie and Evandro Mesquita on brass instruments, as well as the bands Os Paralamas do Sucesso and João Penca e Seus Miquinhos Amestrados. These collaborations add layers of sonic diversity and brilliance to the project, solidifying Tudo Azul as a notable work in Lulu Santos' discography.

Recording

The production of Tudo Azul was led by Liminha, a prominent figure in Brazilian music. The recording process took place at Transamérica studio, in Rio de Janeiro, engineered by Vitor Farias, while the final mix was carried out at the renowned Electric Lady studio, in New York, by Joe Barbaria. The technical sheet reveals a wealth of instrumental and vocal contributions, with Lulu Santos contributing 5 and 12-string guitars, slide guitar, pandeiro, bongos, keyboards, bass, drum programming, sitar and acoustic guitar. Liminha also actively participated on bass, guitar, drum machine and even sound effects, such as whip sounds, complementing the sound with a cast of talented musicians, such as Sérgio Herval on drums, Jorjão Barreto on keyboards and organ, and the brass section with Léo Gandelman on saxophone and Bidinho on trumpet, among other guest instrumentalists and vocalists like Silvinha on harp and Zé Américo on accordion.

Songs

The tracklist of Tudo Azul features a collection of notable compositions, many of them written by Lulu Santos, some in partnership with Nelson Motta, Chacal, Antônio Cícero and Sérgio Souza. Among the most successful tracks, "Último Romântico" and "Lua-de-Mel" stand out. The latter is notable for its fusion of reggae with the lightness of a carnival march, demonstrating the artist's compositional versatility. The track "Ronca, Ronca" deserves mention for its assembly of talents, featuring vocals by Rita Lee and Erasmo Carlos, lead guitar and piano by Roberto de Carvalho, and harmonica by Evandro Mesquita, creating a moment of intense musical collaboration. The album also includes "O Calhambeque", an adaptation by Erasmo Carlos, and "Certas Coisas", another partnership with Nelson Motta that became a classic.
