Why This Album Matters
Garra, released in 1971 by Marcos Valle, is an indelible landmark in the discography of Brazilian Popular Music, representing a high point in the artist's career and a masterpiece of sonic fusion. The album stands out as an "easy-listening Brazilian pop baroque masterpiece", blending sophisticated baroque pop elements with the effervescence of MPB, the swing of soul and samba, and touches of jazz and psychedelia. This work by Valle is frequently highlighted as one of his most enjoyable albums and perhaps the best Brazilian pop record of all time, for the way it harmonises rich arrangements and captivating melodies. Its bold sound, which embraces soul music influences, solidifies its relevance as an album that not only followed the trends of the era but also redefined them, displaying musical inventiveness and a genre-aggregating capability rarely seen.
Context
In 1971, Brazil was living under a military regime, marked by the horrors of Institutional Act Number Five (AI-5) and intense censorship. Many artists were forced into exile or needed to develop creative strategies to circumvent the repression, using lyrics with multiple layers of interpretation. Marcos Valle, with his lyricist brother Paulo Sérgio Valle, chose to remain in the country, contributing to cultural resistance through his music. Before Garra, Marcos Valle had already consolidated his reputation as one of bossa nova's great names, with international successes such as "Samba de Verão" ("Summer Samba"). However, in the years leading up to Garra, the musician was already demonstrating a transition towards a more mature, introspective, and socially conscious approach, incorporating influences of funk, soul, jazz, and psychedelic rock into his music, gradually distancing himself from the purer forms of bossa nova and samba towards a more eclectic and universal sound.
Recording
The album Garra was recorded in 1971 and released by the Odeon label, resulting from Marcos Valle's collaboration with his brother Paulo Sérgio Valle. The production of the record was credited to Milton Miranda and Máriozinho Rocha, with musical direction by Lindolfo Gaya and engineer Z. J. Merky. The record featured an impressive production, utilising a vast array of resources, including high-calibre session musicians, male and female choristers, flutes, harpsichord, mellotron, and orchestrations. Marcos Valle not only contributed vocals and piano but also joined talented musicians such as Robertinho Silva on drums, Dom Salvador on organ and harpsichord, Capacete on electric bass, and Geraldo Vespar on guitar and arrangements. Singer Marizinha also participated in the vocals for one of the tracks. The orchestrations were divided between Geraldo Vespar, Orlando Silveira, and César Camargo Mariano, highlighting the richness and instrumental complexity that permeate the work.
Songs
The songs on Garra are notable for their intricate compositions and lyrics with underlying meanings, a common tactic to circumvent the military dictatorship's censorship. The opening track, "Jesus Meu Rei", exemplifies this duality, capable of being interpreted as a religious plea or, in a deeper reading, a veiled critique of the military president in power. The title track, "Garra", and also "Com Mais De 30", despite their initially cheerful and danceable sound, carry critical messages about the incessant pursuit of money and the detachment from dreams, reflecting a bitter irony about capitalist society and urban alienation. "Black Is Beautiful", with vocals by Marizinha, was inspired by the Black Panthers movement in the United States, celebrating the beauty and empowerment of the black population. Marcos Valle, responsible for the melodies, and Paulo Sérgio Valle, for the lyrics, demonstrated a creative synchronicity that resulted in tracks where "almost every song has a bridge as strong as, or stronger than, the main melody". The album's compositional diversity incorporates samba, baião, and influences from foreign bands like Chicago and Steely Dan, solidifying Garra as a musically multifaceted and lyrically engaged work.
Legacy
Garra was critically acclaimed, called an "easy-listening Brazilian pop baroque masterpiece" by John Bush of AllMusic, who also considered it "the most enjoyable album" of Marcos Valle's career and "perhaps the best Brazilian pop album of all time". The compositional quality, with "bridges as strong as, or stronger than, the main melody", was a major highlight. Mauro Ferreira, from G1, underscored "Valle's embrace of soul music" in this work. Josh Tautz and Felipe Mejia, from The Vinyl Factory, reinforced the album's recognition as "a masterpiece of Brazilian pop", praising the "beautiful baroque pop" of the title track. Garra's relevance was further evidenced by its classification in 225th place on the list of the 500 greatest Brazilian albums, in a survey conducted by the Discoteca Básica podcast, which consulted over 160 music specialists. The album features alongside another notable work by Valle, Previsão do Tempo, which occupied the 142nd position on the same list, consolidating Garra as an essential pillar in the history of MPB.

Delicado: Review of "Garra" by Marcos Valle

'Black is Beautiful', which was also recorded by Elis Regina on her 1971 'Elis', is a really great overblown, anthemic pop anthem. I guess if you weren't a Marcos fan you could be forgiven for finding this slightly cheesy, but I love it.
