Aquarela Nordestina
Marinês e Sua Gente
1959

Why This Album Matters
Aquarela Nordestina, released in 1959, marks Marinês's second Long Play, solidifying her position as the 'Queen of Xaxado' and one of the most important female voices in Nordestina music. This work reinforces the musical identity Marinês had been building, making her a central figure in spreading the rhythms of the Northeast throughout Brazil. The album, placed early in her discography, is a testament to the authenticity and interpretative power that would make her an undeniable reference in the MPB scene. Marinês, known for her infectious energy and powerful voice, brought to this record the effervescence of forró, xaxado, and baião, genres that would consecrate her. Aquarela Nordestina, much like her early works, helped pave the way for her recognition as a true cultural ambassador of the Northeast, presenting the richness and vitality of the region's musical culture to a broad and diverse audience.
Context
Marinês had already trodden a significant path before the release of Aquarela Nordestina. Following a humble childhood in Campina Grande, Paraíba, she began her victorious career in talent contests, where her unmistakable voice stood out. Her encounter with accordionist Abdias dos Oito Baixos, who introduced her to Luiz Gonzaga's repertoire, was a turning point, transforming her into the 'female voice of Nordestina music'. In 1957, Marinês recorded her first LP for SINTER, achieving success with songs by João do Vale. Carried by this acclaim and already crowned by Luiz Gonzaga as the 'Queen of Xaxado', she was establishing herself as a highly prominent artist. Aquarela Nordestina, released two years later, arrived at a time when Marinês was already a respected and beloved figure, with a blossoming career and a clear mission to represent the music of her homeland.
