Samba Raro
Max de Castro
1999

Why This Album Matters
Max de Castro, with his debut album Samba Raro, released in 1999, marked a singular moment in Brazilian music by proposing a sound that intelligently fused the past and the future. The record presents a fluid and captivating mix of genres such as samba, bossa nova, drum 'n' bass, hip-hop and soul, creating futuristic music that, at the same time, echoed tradition. This work by Max de Castro is a notable example of how MPB was able to reinvent itself at the end of the 20th century, without losing its essence, but embracing new global trends. His ability to reconcile such diverse elements resulted in a "rare" and sophisticated style that stood out in the musical landscape of the time.
Context
The release of Samba Raro occurred during a period when the Brazilian musical landscape was considered bleak by some, dominated by waves of axé music, romantic pagode and popstars of dubious taste. There was a search for innovation and new artistic proposals. In this scenario, record labels like Trama emerged, proving to be revolutionary and connected with the most modern international pop music, especially in the electronic segment. Max de Castro, son of the acclaimed singer Wilson Simonal, grew up listening to American soul music and later rediscovered the richness of Brazilian music. Before Samba Raro, he had already demonstrated an interest in mapping and repackaging Black sounds from Rio de Janeiro in the 60s and 70s, with a vision for the future, which culminated in this innovative album.
Recording
Samba Raro is a markedly authorial and experimental work, with Max de Castro taking on multiple roles. He produced, arranged, composed and played most of the instruments on the album, which was described as a "little jewel of improvisation and realisation in a laboratory/back room, crammed with vinyl records and obsolete sound equipment". This DIY (do-it-yourself) approach contributed to the unique and personal sound of the record. The album's recording, carried out in a home environment and full of references, allowed Max de Castro to freely explore the textures and beats that characterise Samba Raro. Trama, the record label responsible for the release, was known for its innovative approach and for embracing the possibilities of the internet for artist promotion, which was uncommon in Brazil in 1999.
Songs
The songs on Samba Raro are notable for the way Max de Castro weaves intricate rhythms and rich melodies. The lyrics, in Portuguese, possess an engaging simplicity, with the artist prioritising melody and rhythm over complex words. The title track, "Samba Raro", compares the movement of a beautiful woman to samba, evoking the sensibility of bossa nova classics. Other songs, such as the energetic "Afrosamba", incorporate elements from consecrated Brazilian compositions, using, for example, excerpts from Baden Powell's "Canto de Ossanha". Original compositions like the elegiac "Você e Eu" also demonstrate Max de Castro's strength and originality. The album also includes tracks such as "Pra Você Lembrar", which narrates the end of a relationship during Carnaval.
Legacy
Samba Raro received a largely positive critical reception, being acclaimed as a landmark in Brazilian music. TIME magazine, for example, described it as coming from the "most original musical talent to emerge from Brazil in three decades". Other international publications, such as Los Angeles Times, NME, Straight No Chaser, Notion Magazine and VirginMega Magazine, also highlighted the album's originality and its fusion of styles. The album sold around 30,000 copies, a respectable number for a debut work with such an innovative proposal. Samba Raro was perceived as a vital bridge between the essence of Brazilian song from the 60s and 70s and contemporary electronic music, influencing the musical scene and paving the way for new experimentation. The album's impact also extended to the DJ universe, with notable remixes of the title track, such as the one by DJ Marky.
