Why This Album Matters

Released in 1970, Milton is the fourth studio album by the acclaimed Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento, and features the participation of the progressive rock band Som Imaginário. Considered by fans and a segment of the specialised media as one of the milestones in the artist's career and in the Minas Gerais music scene of the 70s, the album stands out for its richness and innovation. The album is notable for the fusion of diverse musical styles, its dense instrumentation, and creative studio work. These elements were precursors and fundamental to the sound that would be explored in his iconic subsequent work, Clube da Esquina, solidifying Milton as a driving force in Brazilian music.

Context

Before the recording of Milton, the artist had two significant experiences in cinema. He was responsible for creating the theme for a documentary about the player Tostão, and also acted in and produced the soundtrack for the film Os Deuses e os Mortos, directed by Ruy Guerra.

Recording

The recording of the album Milton featured the fundamental participation of the band Som Imaginário, composed of Wagner Tiso, Zé Rodrix, Tavito, Frederyko, Luiz Alves, and Robertinho Silva. Wagner Tiso, Milton's constant collaborator, played a prominent role, while Lô Borges made special appearances on the tracks "Clube da Esquina" and "Alunar". The album also featured percussion and drums by Naná Vasconcelos and conducting by Dori Caymmi on the song "Alunar". Milton used his cinematographic experience as a basis for the album, introducing the songs "Maria Três Filhos" and "Canto Latino" from the film Os Deuses e os Mortos. He also re-recorded "Pai Grande", authored by himself, and the classic "A felicidade" by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. The album cover, in turn, was created by the designer Kélio Rodrigues, depicting Milton as a black king.

Songs

The album's opening track, "Para Lennon e McCartney", became one of Milton Nascimento's great classics. Composed by Lô Borges, Fernando Brant, and Márcio Borges, the song was conceived during a Sunday pasta lunch, when Lô created the base on the piano, while Fernando Brant and Márcio Borges developed the lyrics. The inspiration for the lyrics arose when Lô commented that he was thinking of the Lennon and McCartney partnership, in a year when The Beatles were announcing the end of the band. Passages such as "Eu sou da América do Sul. Eu sei, vocês não vão saber..." refer to the cultural distance and the fact that the English composers would never know the partnership between the Brazilian friends. Other notable songs include "Maria Três Filhos" and "Canto Latino", which were introduced from the soundtrack of the film Os Deuses e os Mortos. The album also featured a re-recording of "Pai Grande", authored by Milton himself, and a version of "A felicidade", a classic by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes.

Legacy

Milton is widely recognised by fans and a segment of the specialised media as one of the most important albums in Milton Nascimento's career and in the musical landscape of Minas Gerais in the 70s. The work is seen as a milestone, its elements of varied musical styles, dense instrumentation, and creative studio work being fundamental predecessors for the conception and sound of his subsequent album, Clube da Esquina, solidifying its influence.
