Why This Album Matters
Nadadenovo, Mombojó's debut album, emerged in 2004 as one of the great revelations of the Recife music scene, consolidating the identity of a band that already stood out for its originality. The album presented a highly energetic sound, innovatively combining guitars, computers, and cavaquinhos. The work is an invitation to an auditory experience where sound effects blend with romantic dramas, and spectacular bass lines collide with jazz improvisations. The group's surprising and mature sonic unity lies precisely in the disparity of roles played by each musician, creating a cohesive, reverent, and entertaining result. Nadadenovo was Mombojó's way of announcing to Brazil that, even before Carnaval, a new and vibrant chapter of Brazilian music was beginning.
Context
Formed in April 2001 in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, the band Mombojó quickly integrated into the local music scene. Already in 2002, the group participated in important events such as the 10º Abril pro Rock, where it was acclaimed as the great revelation of the new Recife scene. This initial recognition and the peculiar sound, which blended traditional and modern elements, prepared the ground for the recording of their first work. In 2003, Mombojó received support from the Culture Incentive System of the Recife City Council, which made the production of Nadadenovo viable.
Recording
The album Nadadenovo was entirely recorded and mixed in the city of Recife, featuring musical production by Igor Medeiros and the duo Mad Mud, composed of Leo D and William P. The final stage of the process, mastering, was carried out in São Paulo, at the Classic Master studio.
Legacy
Since its release, Nadadenovo stood out for its innovative approach to distribution. Mombojó made all the album tracks available for free download on their website, and also released the complete files of one of the songs under a Creative Commons licence, a pioneering move for the time. The album received several positive reviews and, in April 2004, on the band's third anniversary, it was included as an insert in Revista OutraCoisa, popularly known as "Lobão's magazine". This initiative guaranteed a national distribution of 20,000 copies by Tratore. The album's lasting relevance was re-affirmed in 2019, when Nadadenovo was re-released on vinyl, in a limited edition of 500 copies, as part of the Três Selos collection.
