Samba Esquema Noise
Mundo Livre S/A
1994

Why This Album Matters
Samba Esquema Noise, the debut album by the band Mundo Livre S/A, released in 1994, is a masterpiece that redefined sounds in Brazilian music. With its title referencing Jorge Ben's classic Samba Esquema Novo, the album proposes an audacious fusion of samba, rock, punk, and regional rhythms, creating an innovative sonic identity. Considered by some critics to be the sonic translation of the 90s, this inaugural work stands out for its originality and its ability to traverse different musical universes, consolidating a particular aesthetic that would mark the cultural scene of the era.
Armed with the manifesto "Caranguejos com Cérebro", the mangueboys invaded the Southeast and then the rest of the world with intelligent lyrics and a blend of electronic music, maracatu, rock, and samba.

Context
Despite having been formed for ten years, the band Mundo Livre S/A only made its eagerly awaited phonographic debut in 1994. Samba Esquema Noise was the second release from the Banguela Records label, an initiative by Titãs in partnership with journalist and producer Carlos Eduardo Miranda and Warner, following Raimundos' debut album.
Recording
Samba Esquema Noise was an ambitious production, which even exceeded its recording deadline and initial budget, estimated at over 40,000 dollars. The album was recorded and mixed by Beto Machado (Bob Mac) at Be Bop studios in São Paulo, between May and July 1994, using a 24-track analogue system and totalling 660 studio hours. In addition to its bold production, the album featured numerous special guest appearances, spread across many of its thirteen tracks. Guests included friends and percussionists from Nação Zumbi, Nasi (vocalist of Ira!, on the track "Homero, o Junkie"), actress Malu Mader (on "Musa da Ilha Grande") and Naná Vasconcelos on "Rios (Smart Drugs), Pontes e Overdrives". The creative effervescence was such that anyone visiting the recording studio offered to contribute, culminating in final arrangements crafted by Charles Gavin and Carlos Eduardo Miranda.
Songs
The album's thirteen tracks, predominantly composed by Fred Zero Quatro, demonstrate lyrical and compositional richness, cohesively integrating the band's diverse sonic influences. The songs benefited from special guest appearances, which added unique layers and textures to the album's sound. The track "Sob o Calçamento (Se Espumar é Gente)" is a notable example of this intense collaboration, featuring Gilmar Bola 8, Toca, Gira, Canhoto, and Dengue (Nação Zumbi), Paulo Miklos, Nando Reis, and Charles Gavin (Titãs), in addition to other musicians and producer Apolo 9. This song also includes an uncredited recording of "Oração A João Pessoa", edited by Alex Antunes, lending historical and cultural depth to the music.

The lowercase spelling of the band's name, led by Fred “04” Montenegro, co-signatory of the 1º Manifesto do Movimento Mangue Bit, does not conceal the enormous ambition of the youngsters from Pernambuco: to revolutionise Northeastern music from its own tradition.

Legacy
Samba Esquema Noise was widely acclaimed by critics, being considered one of the best albums of the 1990s by ShowBizz magazine and one of the great records of Brazilian music by Rolling Stone Brasil. The newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, in a positive review, named it a candidate for best Brazilian music CD of the year, stating that "Generation 90 already has its great album". Despite the positive critical reception, initial CD sales were low, leading the album to quickly go out of catalogue. However, its importance was recognised over time, with re-releases in 2001 (in the Arquivos Warner series), 2004 (in the Bit box set), 2014 (on yellow vinyl with 10 tracks), and 2024 (on vinyl with all tracks by Noize Records). The album also features in 69th position on the list of the 100 best Brazilian music albums and in 122nd position in a poll of 162 music specialists conducted by the Discoteca Básica podcast.
