Why This Album Matters

Nana Caymmi, daughter of the legendary Dorival Caymmi and singer Stella Maris, released her debut album, Nana, in 1963. This album marked the formal beginning of her solo recording career, revealing to the public the unique voice that would become one of the most respected in Brazilian music. Produced by the Elenco record label, Nana stood out for the sophisticated arrangements by Oscar Castro-Neves, a significant figure in bossa nova and jazz, who shaped the sound of the singer's initial work. The album is a fundamental document in Nana Caymmi's journey, paving the way for her long and celebrated career.

Context

Dinahir Tostes Caymmi, artistically known as Nana Caymmi, grew up immersed in a musical environment, inheriting the talent and vocation of her parents. Before her first solo album, she had already taken her first steps in the artistic scene in 1960, recording the track "Acalanto" on her father Dorival Caymmi's LP, a lullaby he composed for her in childhood, recorded as a duet. In that same year, Nana released her first 78 RPM record with the songs "Adeus" and "Nossos beijos", and signed a contract with TV Tupi, performing on programmes such as Sucessos Musicais and A Canção de Nana, the latter alongside her brother Dori Caymmi. The 1963 album Nana, therefore, was not her first contact with the recording universe, but rather her starting point for a solo career in LP format.
