Why This Album Matters

Novos Baianos, also known as Linguagem do Alunte, represents a crucial chapter in the discography of the legendary Brazilian group. Released as the fourth studio album by the Bahian band, it marks a significant transitional moment, being the last work before the departure of Moraes Moreira, one of the pillars of their original line-up. This album is emblematic for proposing a "new language", as suggested by its alternative title. The term "Alunte", introduced into the group's vocabulary, encapsulates a search for something that, in Moraes Moreira's words, went "far beyond hallucination", reflecting the continuous experimentation and singular musical identity of Novos Baianos.

Recording

The recording process for the album Novos Baianos took place in an unusual setting: a farm in the state of São Paulo, a direct invitation from a record label executive. This album also marked an unprecedented achievement for the group, as it was the first time they had released more than one studio album with the same record label, Continental. In 2002, the album was re-released on CD by Warner Music, as part of a collection called 'Dois Momentos', allowing new generations to access this work.

Songs

Comprising nine tracks, the album predominantly features compositions by the duo Luiz Galvão and Moraes Moreira. However, the song "Isabel (Bebel)" stands out, being one of the rare creations by João Gilberto, an artist of immense influence for Novos Baianos. Another highlight is "Reis da Bola", an Afro-frevo that reveres Brazilian football with its characteristic energy and rhythm. The lyrics and melodies, aligned with the concept of "Linguagem do Alunte", reinforce the group's quest for sounds and expressions that transcended the conventional, solidifying their innovative identity.
