Why This Album Matters

Novos Baianos F.C., the third studio album by Novos Baianos, represents a significant milestone in the group's discography and in Brazilian music. Released in 1973 by Continental, the record is a demonstration of the band's versatility and musical innovation. This work stands out for its rich sonic tapestry, masterfully blending diverse Brazilian genres. The album incorporates elements of frevo, baião, choro, and samba, skilfully interwoven with touches of rock n' roll, creating a unique and vibrant sound that characterises the group's period of creative effervescence.

Context

The album was recorded during a period of intense experimentation and communal living for Novos Baianos. After leaving the Som Livre record label, the group members settled on a property in Jacarepaguá, where they lived in a state of near anarchy, right in the middle of Brazil's military regime. In this environment, the group's daily life was divided between a passion for football and musical creation, which led them to consider themselves not just a band, but a true 'football team'. This context of collective living and creative freedom, driven by the success of its predecessor Acabou Chorare, was fundamental to the conception of Novos Baianos F.C.

Recording

The recording of Novos Baianos F.C. took place in a very particular setting, at the Jacarepaguá property, where the group resided and cultivated their communal lifestyle. Continental was the record label responsible for this project. The band's routine at this location was, in fact, documented in 1973 by a German TV broadcaster, in a film titled "Novos Baianos Futebol Clube". The documentary recorded everyday moments of the musicians, such as football matches, looking after children, and the composition process, offering a glimpse into the album's creative environment.

Songs

The repertoire of Novos Baianos F.C. is a celebration of Brazil's musical richness, with songs that traverse a vast range of rhythms and styles. The album includes a re-recording of the classic "O Samba da Minha Terra" by Dorival Caymmi, paying homage to one of the greatest figures in national music. Furthermore, tracks such as "Sorrir e cantar como Bahia", "Só se não for Brasileiro Nessa Hora", and "Vagabundo não é Fácil", composed by Luiz Galvão and Moraes Moreira, demonstrate the band's songwriting ability to merge different genres. The contribution of Pepeu Gomes in compositions like "Com qualquer Dois Mil Réis" and the inclusion of "Alimente" by Jorginho and Pepeu Gomes, solidify the collective and inventive nature of the creations.

Legacy

Novos Baianos F.C. is widely recognised as one of the group's best albums by a large proportion of its fans and by specialist critics. Released at the height of Novos Baianos' popularity, driven by the success of their previous work, Acabou Chorare, the record consolidated the band's reputation. This album is also considered one of the greatest musical innovations in Brazilian music. Its eclectic approach and the fusion of genres contributed significantly to the enrichment of the musical scene of the time, leaving an indelible mark and being revered as a work of great aesthetic and cultural importance.
