Why This Album Matters

Released in 1973, O Terço's second self-titled album marked a definitive turn for the band towards progressive rock, a style that would become their signature. After initial experimentations with 50s rock, folk, and classical music, this work solidified the group's identity in the Brazilian music scene as an exponent of the genre. The album is a clear declaration of their progressive ambitions, moving away from the lighter influences of their beginnings. This album is notable for its complexity and elaborate arrangements, presenting a heavier and more sophisticated sound. The work reflects the artistic maturity of the trio, who sought inspiration from English progressive rock to create an original and intricate sound, characterised by extensive compositions and rich instrumentation.

Context

Before the release of this crucial album, O Terço underwent significant transformations in its line-up and musical direction. Guitarist Sérgio Hinds had returned to the group after a period with Ivan Lins, and an internal change resulted in the departure of Jorge Amiden, the band's initial creative mind. The line-up for this album consisted of Sérgio Hinds on guitar, Cezar de Mercês on bass, and Vinícius Cantuária on drums. Influenced by English progressive rock, the group had already signalled this transition with the release of a denser single in 1972, containing the songs "Ilusão de Ótica" and "Tempo É Vento". The band had also participated in the recording of Marcos Valle's album Vento Sul, consolidating their experience and artistic direction towards a more elaborate and progressive sound.

Songs

The album's centrepiece is the long suite "Amanhecer Total", composed by the three members and divided into six distinct themes, demonstrating O Terço's ability to construct complex musical narratives. The suite explores diverse textures and atmospheres, a striking characteristic of progressive rock. The album also stands out for its notable special appearances, which enrich the sonic palette of the songs. Luiz Paulo Simas contributes with synthesiser keyboards (Módulo 1000), adding futuristic layers. Patrícia do Valle's voice introduces the theme "Cores", while Chico Batera adds percussive nuances and Maran Schagen concludes "Cores Finais" on piano. The participation of renowned musician Paulo Moura, playing alto saxophone on the track "Você aí", adds a jazzy and sophisticated touch to the work.
