Why This Album Matters

Released in 2012, 66 marked the dazzling debut of the São Paulo band O Terno, immediately presenting the public with a sound that stood out for its originality and sagacity. The album laid the foundations for the trio's distinctive style, characterised by an intelligent fusion of 1960s rock, psychedelic rock, and MPB elements, creating a sound that was both nostalgic and innovative. Composed of ten tracks, the record revealed the band's lyrical and instrumental verve, with Martim Bernardes, Guilherme D'Almeida, and Victor Chaves exploring sophisticated arrangements and lyrics permeated with irony and humour. The work was a calling card that resonated for its ability to revisit classic sounds with a contemporary approach, addressing creative dilemmas and offering a good-humoured critique of the cultural industry.

Context

Formed in 2009, the power trio O Terno began its journey in São Paulo, initially gaining notoriety with covers of iconic bands such as Os Mutantes, The Beatles, and The Kinks. This phase of experimentation and assimilation of classic influences paved the way for the development of a robust and unique original repertoire. In 2012, with the release of 66, the band emerged as one of the prominent voices of Brazil's independent scene at the start of the decade, standing out for the maturity of its musical and lyrical proposal, which already demonstrated Tim Bernardes' potential as one of the great composers of his generation.

Recording

The album 66 was recorded in 2011 and independently released in 2012, initially on CD and for free download online. In 2014, the record also received an LP version. The album's technical specifications reveal the classic trio line-up: Martim Bernardes on guitar and vocals, Guilherme D'Almeida on bass, and Victor Chaves on drums. The record also featured notable special guests, such as Maurício Pereira on vocals and tenor saxophone on Side B tracks, Dino Vicente on Minimoog on "Enterrei Vivo", and Marcelo Jeneci on Hammond on "66" and "Zé, Assassino Compulsivo", contributing to the work's sonic richness.

Songs

O Terno structured 66 into two distinct sides, each with its own particularity and charm. Side A consists of five original tracks, mostly written by Martim Bernardes, which explore themes such as youthful melancholies in "Enterrei Vivo", striking characters in "Zé, Assassino Compulsivo", and existential reflections in "Morto". The title track "66" stands out for the irony in its verses, which question the dilemmas of originality in contemporary music and the reception of the cultural industry. Side B, in turn, pays a creative homage to the work of Maurício Pereira and his band Os Mulheres Negras, with five versions interpreted by O Terno and Maurício Pereira himself. Songs such as "Modão de Pinheiros" incorporate elements of regional genres, reminiscent of Tom Zé's lyrics, while "Tudo por Ti" features a sound with touches of Ska. This division demonstrates the band's ability to reconcile its authorial identity with the reinterpretation of works that form its base of influence.

Legacy

66 was enthusiastically received by music critics and the public, establishing itself as one of the most inventive and memorable records released in Brazil in 2012. The newspaper O Globo classified it as "one of the most impressive debut albums by a Brazilian band", while Rolling Stone Brasil magazine included it among the 25 best Brazilian albums of that year. In addition to critical acclaim, the album also achieved success at awards ceremonies: the music video for the title track "66" won in the Best Video of the Year category at the Prêmio Multishow 2012, and the band was elected MTV Bet at VMB 2012. This initial impact was fundamental in projecting O Terno onto the national independent music scene, establishing the group as a benchmark for its ability to balance the nostalgia of the 1960s with the anguished lyricism of the 2010s, and solidifying Tim Bernardes' reputation as a highly talented composer.
