La Voglia la Pazzia l'Incoscienza l'Allegria
Ornella Vanoni, Vinicius de Moraes & Toquinho
1976

Why This Album Matters
Released in 1976, the album La Voglia la Pazzia l'Incoscienza l'Allegria represents a singular meeting point between the sophistication of Brazilian bossa nova and the elegance of Italian song, establishing itself as a landmark of transcultural collaboration. The work brings together the emotional interpretation of acclaimed Italian singer Ornella Vanoni with the poetic genius of Vinicius de Moraes and the instrumental and vocal mastery of Toquinho, creating an artistic fusion of rare sensibility. This album is not just a collection of translated songs, but an 'emotional bridge' connecting Rome to Rio de Janeiro, celebrating the encounter between the sentimental Italian soul and the rhythmic sensuality of Brazilian popular music. Ornella Vanoni's voice, described as 'perfect' and 'vibrato-free and perfectly in tune', demonstrated a unique ability to adapt to complex Brazilian rhythms, overcoming initial criticisms that she would be 'too refined' for bossa. The project stands out for its originality and its ability to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers, offering a new dimension to bossa nova classics and original compositions.
Context
The 1970s landscape in Italy was particularly receptive to Brazilian music, especially bossa nova, which had conquered the country since the late 60s. Many Brazilian artists, including Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho, and Chico Buarque, found refuge and a fertile environment for their creations in Italy during the period of exile after the coup d'état in Brazil. This cultural effervescence fostered various artistic exchanges, with Brazilian musicians collaborating with Italians and vice-versa. Ornella Vanoni already had a relationship with Brazilian music, having performed Italian versions of songs such as 'L'appuntamento' (a version of a Roberto Carlos hit). The producer and translator Sergio Bardotti, a bossa nova enthusiast, had long harboured the desire to create a project that would translate these songs into Italian, seeking a singer 'mature and rich in experience, versatile, but with a well-defined personality' to give voice to this endeavour, finding in Vanoni the ideal interpreter.
Recording
The album was recorded at Fonit Cetra studios in Rome, between 1 and 9 April 1976. Sergio Bardotti's production sought to capture the spontaneity of the musicians in live recorded sessions, with the instrumental and vocal foundations being registered organically. Subsequently, strings and choirs were added, with arrangements carefully elaborated by Gianfranco Lombardi, enriching the sound without losing its acoustic essence. La Voglia la Pazzia l'Incoscienza l'Allegria presents itself as a conceptual album, where songs and poems intertwine, often without clear pauses between tracks, creating a fluid and continuous narrative. Besides Ornella Vanoni, Vinicius de Moraes, and Toquinho, the team of musicians included Azeitona on bass and Mutinho on drums, ensuring the authentic Brazilian rhythmic feel.
Songs
The album's repertoire is a careful selection of works by great names in Brazilian music, such as Antônio Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Baden Powell, and Paulinho da Viola, in addition to compositions by Toquinho and Vinicius de Moraes. The lyrics, for the most part, were faithfully translated into Italian by Sergio Bardotti, who managed to preserve the poetic depth of the originals. Notable exceptions include the title track, which allowed for the creation of an original text, and 'Anema e core', a Neapolitan classic interpreted in the samba style. Among the thirteen tracks, iconic versions stand out, such as 'Io so che ti amerò' ('Eu Sei que Vou Te Amar') by Jobim and Vinicius, 'Samba in preludio', and 'Samba per Vinicius' ('Samba pra Vinicius'). Vinicius de Moraes is not limited to just writing the lyrics, but also participates with recitatives of his poems, punctuating the album with his voice and 'delightfully grammatically incorrect' interpretation, adding an extra layer of emotion and authenticity.
Legacy
Since its release, La Voglia la Pazzia l'Incoscienza l'Allegria achieved significant success in Italy, reaching the sixth position on the sales charts. The album also received lasting critical acclaim, being included in Rolling Stone Italia magazine's list as one of the 100 most beautiful Italian albums of all time, at 76th position, solidifying its status as an 'timeless masterpiece' and a 'cornerstone' of Italian music and cultural fusion. The album's relevance has endured over the decades, being re-released in different formats. In 1977, an extended play (EP) was released on the Brazilian market by the RCA Victor label, featuring some selected songs from the original LP. In 2009, the album was again recognised with a luxury 200g vinyl reissue, part of the Japanese Audiophilie Production's 'Club of the 496' series, with a limited run of just 496 copies, highlighting its value to collectors and audiophiles worldwide.
