Why This Album Matters
Bossa, Zizi Possi's seventeenth studio album released in 2001, stands out for its unique approach to the genre that gives it its name. Far from being a conventional tribute, the album reinterprets pop songs by various artists with arrangements inspired by bossa nova, creating an elegant and original fusion. The singer sought to infuse the subtlety and characteristic beat of bossa nova into compositions by names such as The Beatles, Cazuza, and Gilberto Gil. This work represents Zizi Possi's creative vision, as she chose this direction even after the record label suggested an album of bossa nova classics. The album cover, reminiscent of the 50s and 60s aesthetic, with references to Copacabana promenade and the photos of young women that illustrated LPs of the era, complements the proposal to revisit and renew the style without artificiality. It is a record that celebrates the artist's impeccable vocal technique, applied to a surprising repertoire.
Context
The release of Bossa followed a period of success for Zizi Possi, who had come from the successful tour for her previous album, Puro Prazer, from 1999, which even received a gold record. In this positive context, the singer felt it was an opportune moment to record a new work. Despite the record label's initial suggestion to focus on bossa nova classics, Possi opted for a more authorial path, selecting pop songs by various artists such as The Beatles, Cazuza, Gilberto Gil, and Herbert Vianna, and arranging them from a bossa nova perspective.
Recording
The recording of the album Bossa was an intimate and collaborative process, carried out at Zizi Possi's country house. Accompanied by violinist Camilo Carrara and pianist Jether Garotti Jr., the singer recorded several cassette tapes with the songs. To refine the interpretations and sound, Possi sought opinions from everyone around her, including the cook and cleaner, demonstrating a search for authenticity and the exact tone. In an interview, she revealed that her objective was to sing songs where she detected "bossa nova cells", citing examples such as songs by Sting, Sade, and "Yesterday" by Lennon and McCartney. The album's visual aesthetic was also carefully conceived to evoke the bossa nova era. The cover of Bossa directly refers to the photos of anonymous young women that illustrated LPs and EPs in the 1960s, as well as incorporating visual elements of Copacabana promenade, reinforcing the connection with the Carioca movement that inspired the album.
Legacy
The critical reception of the album Bossa was mixed, reflecting the originality of Zizi Possi's proposal. Apoenan Rodrigues praised the singer's elegant and original approach, which, according to him, differed from boring tributes to the genre, creating something new without artificiality by lending the subtlety and guitar beat of João Gilberto. On the other hand, Pedro Alexandre Sanches, from Folha de S.Paulo, while recognising the elegance of some versions, criticised the diversity of themes and languages, suggesting that it harmed the overall cohesion of the album and earned it a review of "worth it, but not much". Marco Antonio Barbosa, from the Cliquemusic website, rated the album two out of five stars, describing it as "mediocre as a bossa nova album and somewhat frustrating as a creative journey". He argued that what prevails in Bossa is Zizi Possi herself, the "diva, singer of impeccable technique and eternally on the edge between the dramatics of singing and the cool aspiration of the arrangements that surround her", rather than a strict homage to the style. The album was promoted with a tour across several Brazilian cities and the release of a music video for the song "Eu Só Sei Amar Assim".
