Context

Formed in the 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, the group Os Gatos emerged at a time of great cultural and political effervescence in Brazil, which saw the consolidation of bossa nova and the emergence of new musical movements. The original line-up of the ensemble was a true "dream team" of instrumental music, bringing together Durval Ferreira (guitar and arrangements), Neco (guitar), Eumir Deodato (keyboards and arrangements), Paulo Moura (alto sax), Copinha (flute), Meirelles (flute), Edson Maciel (trombone), Norato (trombone), Maurício Einhorn (harmonica), Maurílio Santos (trumpet) and Wilson das Neves (drums). The individual expertise of each member contributed to the group's unique and high-quality sound.

Recording

The album Os Gatos, from 1964, was released by the Philips record label. The album's production featured musical direction by Durval Ferreira and arrangements by Eumir Deodato, who already demonstrated his exceptional talent in orchestration. The recording sessions benefited from the skill and experience of a top-tier team of instrumentalists, ensuring impeccable execution and remarkable timbral richness. The participation of various wind instruments, such as flute, saxophone, trombone, trumpet and harmonica, was fundamental in constructing the group's distinctive sound.

The repertoire of the album Os Gatos comprises 12 tracks, presenting a mixture of original compositions and interpretations of other hits. Among the songs, "Novo Sol", "A Chuva" and "Verdade em Paz" stand out, all by Durval Ferreira and Pedro Camargo. Other notable tracks include "Nuvens" and "Sambidu", both co-written by Durval Ferreira and Maurício Einhorn, and "Tristeza de Nós Dois", by Durval Ferreira, Bebeto and Maurício Einhorn. Legacy

Despite having recorded only two albums in their career, the debut album by the group Os Gatos, from 1964, is considered an important album in the history of Brazilian popular music. Its sound influenced bossa nova and jazz samba, being recognised for the quality of Eumir Deodato's arrangements and the musicians' performance. The album was reissued on CD in 1998 by PolyGram, and later also received reissues in Japan in 2002, 2014 and 2021.
