Context
Before the release of their debut album, Os Mutantes had already consolidated a prominent presence in the Brazilian cultural scene. The band debuted on TV Record's programme "O Pequeno Mundo de Ronnie Von", where they contributed soundtracks that adapted classical compositions for rock and performed international hits. Their refusal to participate in Jovem Guarda, due to the amount of equipment they used, demonstrated the band's originality and commitment to their sound. The year 1967 was crucial for the group, who, through maestro Rogério Duprat, met Gilberto Gil. This partnership resulted in songs such as "Bom Dia" and "Domingo no Parque", the latter presented at the III Festival de Música Popular Brasileira, marking the group's Tropicalista debut and winning second place. From then on, Os Mutantes immersed themselves in the Tropicalista movement, participating in historical events such as the controversial performance of "É Proibido Proibir" at the III Festival Internacional da Canção and the programme "Divino, Maravilhoso". The band also contributed to the "manifesto album" Tropicalia ou Panis et Circencis and to recordings by Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, in addition to producing television commercials and jingles.
Recording
The album was recorded in early 1968 under the production of Manoel Barenbein and with arrangements by Rogério Duprat, a central figure in the fusion of sounds that characterised Tropicalismo. The album's sound conception is marked by intense experimentalism, which transcended the standards of the time. The recording process employed various studio techniques, such as unexpected rhythm changes, distorted guitars, and the creative use of noises and sound effects. A notable example of this inventiveness is the use of unconventional objects to simulate instrument sounds, such as an insecticide pump used on the track "Le Premier Bonheur do Jour", demonstrating the constant search for new textures and timbres.

The sound of Os Mutantes is a rich tapestry, reflecting the strong influence of the English band The Beatles and psychedelic rock, skilfully intertwined with typically Brazilian musical genres. This fusion is evident in tracks such as "A Minha Menina", which incorporates samba elements, "Bat Macumba" with touches of candomblé, and "Maria Fulô", which embraces baião. The album's compositions carry stories and peculiarities. The opening track, "Panis et Circenses", is a creation by Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, composed in just fifteen minutes. "A Minha Menina", a classic, was written by Jorge Ben at Rita Lee's request. "O Relógio" is a personal homage from Rita Lee to her own clock, while "Maria Fulô", a song by Sivuca and Humberto Teixeira from 1951, was suggested by Rita to "Brazilianise" the repertoire, being a melody her mother used to play on the piano. The song "Senhor F" was strongly inspired by The Beatles' "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!", and "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour" is a French song, originally by Françoise Hardy, which Rita Lee had already performed with her group Teenage Singers.
Released almost simultaneously with the manifesto album Tropicália ou Panis et circensis, Os Mutantes' first LP advanced the collective's playful explorations.

Legacy
Since its release, Os Mutantes has been acclaimed as an avant-garde work, redefining the Brazilian musical landscape by blending psychedelic rock with national elements, an unprecedented approach for the era that surpassed the more pop phase of iê-iê-iê. The album garnered positive reviews globally, with John Bush of Allmusic describing it as an "incredibly creative journey" that assimilated orchestral pop, lunatic psychedelia, and concrete music, considering it "Much more experimental than any of the albums produced by bands from Great Britain or America of the psychedelic era". The album's recognition transcended borders, being ranked 9th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest Brazilian music albums. MOJO magazine elected it one of the 50 most experimental albums in history, surpassing names like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Frank Zappa. Furthermore, Al Borde magazine included it in 21st Position on the list "Los 250: Essential Albums of All Time Latin Alternative - Rock Iberoamericano", making it the highest-placed Brazilian album in that selection.
