Why This Album Matters

Tecnicolor stands out as the eighth studio album by the iconic Brazilian band Os Mutantes, released by Universal in April 2000. Its central concept makes it a singular work in the group's discography, revisiting and reinventing part of their repertoire. The album is notable for its multilingual daring. It features versions of several songs previously recorded by the group, now performed in other languages, alongside some re-recordings maintaining their original languages. This fusion of English, French, Castilian, and Portuguese underscores the artistic breadth and international vision of Os Mutantes.

Context

Despite its release in the new millennium, the material comprising Tecnicolor has its roots firmly planted in the early 70s. The album was originally recorded in November 1970, during Os Mutantes' second visit to France.

Recording

The recording sessions for Tecnicolor took place at Des Dames Studio, in Paris, in November 1970. A notable detail of the graphic design project is the collaboration of Sean Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who was responsible for the illustration and calligraphy of the album cover.

Legacy

The repercussions of Tecnicolor, although not detailed in terms of sales or comprehensive critical reception, had a moment of prominence with the inclusion of the song "Baby". The track was part of the soundtrack for the popular soap opera "Laços de Família", broadcast by TV Globo between 2000 and 2001, serving as the theme for the character Camila, played by Carolina Dieckmann.
