Why This Album Matters

Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol, Os Mutantes' sixth album, represents a fundamental landmark in the band's trajectory and in the landscape of Brazilian progressive rock. Released in 1974, this work solidified the group's transition from its psychedelic and Tropicalia roots to a more elaborate and virtuosic sound, diving headfirst into the world of progressive rock. The audacity of Sérgio Dias, the sole remaining member of the original line-up, in redefining the Mutantes' identity for an audience that questioned the absence of the classic members, is a testament to the resilience and artistic vision that still pulsed at the heart of the band. The album is not merely a collection of songs but a declaration of principles, revealing Os Mutantes' ability to reinvent themselves and explore new musical frontiers. With longer compositions and intricate arrangements, the record demonstrated a technical and creative maturity that would position it as one of the pillars of national progressive music. Its importance lies in the courage to follow a less commercial path at the time, betting on a sonic complexity that, surprisingly, captivated both specialist critics and the general public, becoming a commercial and critical success.

Context

Before the recording of Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol, Os Mutantes faced a period of profound transformations and challenges. The departure of Arnaldo Baptista, one of the band's creative pillars, was a significant blow, compounded by his personal crisis and LSD abuse. Shortly before the album, bassist Liminha also left the group, leaving Sérgio Dias as the sole member of the original line-up. Faced with these disagreements and the need for a new beginning, Sérgio Dias opted for a radical change. The band left their home in Serra da Cantareira and moved to a country estate in Itaipava, Rio de Janeiro. There, Sérgio, along with new members Túlio Mourão, Rui Motta, and Antônio Pedro de Medeiros, signed with the Som Livre record label, marking the beginning of a new phase for Os Mutantes.

Recording

The album was conceived and recorded during a period of intense and almost feverish creativity. The material included songs composed after Arnaldo Baptista's departure, with some contributions still from Liminha, who left shortly before the recording. The move to Itaipava symbolised not only a geographical change but also a new breath of life for the band, which found the synergy for this project in the new line-up. One of the most notable characteristics of the recording of Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol is that it was captured in a single, uninterrupted take at RCA studios in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Sérgio Dias described the process as a 'live in the studio' recording, which imbues the album with a raw and authentic energy. Rumours from the time indicate that most of the band, with the exception of keyboardist Túlio Mourão, were under the influence of LSD during the sessions, which, for some, would explain the album's psychedelic and complex sound.

Songs

The tracks on Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol stand out for their progressive architecture, characterised by "long and elaborate songs" with intricate arrangements and complex instrumentation. The album incorporates elements of rock, jazz, and pop, but it is in progressive music that its essence manifests, with extended instrumental passages and great virtuosity from the musicians. Among the compositions, "Pitágoras" is a notable instrumental track that demonstrates the technical prowess of the new line-up. "Desanuviar" explores innovative sonic textures, including sitar lines played by Sérgio Dias and vocals divided into distinct voices, elements that illustrate the group's experimentalism. The title track, "Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol", almost nine minutes long, is described as predominantly melodic, with elaborate vocal harmonies and lyrics that evoke themes of renewal, optimism, and the search for clarity and meaning, using the sun as a central symbol of vital energy and inspiration.

Legacy

Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol not only marked a new phase for Os Mutantes but also achieved significant commercial success, becoming the band's best-selling album to date. The public's reception was warm, and the promotional tour was the most extensive the group had ever undertaken. Despite some initial criticisms branding the band as "imitators of foreign music" due to the change in style, the album was widely acclaimed by music critics retrospectively. It is frequently chosen as one of the best Brazilian progressive rock albums of all time, solidifying the band's position in this genre. Over time, Tudo Foi Feito pelo Sol became a collector's item, highly coveted and valued in the market. The recognition of the album's importance was reaffirmed in 2013, when the same line-up that recorded it reunited for a mini-tour, playing the album in its entirety and celebrating its lasting legacy in Brazilian music.
