Why This Album Matters

Released in 1984, O Passo do Lui is much more than Os Paralamas do Sucesso's second album: it is the work that cemented the band's sonic identity and became one of the pillars of 80s Brazilian rock. Unlike its predecessor, Cinema Mudo, this album presented a more 'raw and direct' sound, with drums and bass in prominence, consolidating the talented 'rhythm section' of the trio Herbert Vianna, Bi Ribeiro and João Barone. The fusion of rock, reggae and ska, which would become a trademark of Paralamas, gained more defined contours on this album, moving the band away from the image of merely being a 'Brazilian Police' and asserting their originality. The album not only defined the band's sound but also delivered compositions that became timeless classics of Brazilian music. With lyrics that captured the post-adolescent spirit of the decade and melodies that transitioned from danceable to romantic without losing authenticity, O Passo do Lui is a compilation in album form, with most of its tracks achieving radio success. It is a work that masterfully balanced musical quality, popular appeal and a sense of temporal identity, marking a golden era for national rock.

Context

Prior to the resounding success of O Passo do Lui, Os Paralamas do Sucesso had released Cinema Mudo in 1983. Although the first album had some success, with the title track and "Vital e sua Moto" playing on the radio, the final result did not entirely please the trio, who felt the production was somewhat excessive in echoes, effects and keyboards due to label imposition. The period of 1984 in Brazil was one of political effervescence, with frustration over the rejection of direct elections, but also of great musical creativity, with the consolidation of bands that would shape the 80s generation. In this scenario, the group sought a simpler and more authentic sound for their second work.

Recording

For O Passo do Lui, the band opted for a more minimalist approach to production, aiming to prioritise the sound of the bass, guitar and drums. The album was recorded in June 1984 at EMI-Odeon Studios in Rio de Janeiro. Production direction was handled by Mayrton Bahia, with Marcelo Sussekind on executive production and Franklin Garrido as assistant. The recording engineering team included José Celso Guida, Franklin Garrido and Renato Luiz, with Marcelo Sussekind and Franklin Garrido also responsible for mixing. A notable production detail was a graphic flaw in the first two hundred copies of the album, which were released without a booklet, only with the songs and technical credits printed. In 1997, the album was remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London by Chris Blair, with Chris Buchanan handling administration, which demonstrates the importance and care taken with the work's longevity.

Songs

The album is a veritable parade of hits, with seven of its ten songs being widely played on the radio. Highlights include "Óculos", which was already a success even before the band's historic performance at Rock in Rio in 1985, and "Meu Erro", which became one of the group's biggest classics, with its pop melody and romantic lyrics. Other tracks such as "Romance Ideal", "Ska", "Mensagem de Amor" and "Me Liga" also established themselves as audience favourites. Most of the compositions are penned by Herbert Vianna, demonstrating his ability to create lyrics that ranged from light and playful to romantic, without ever being mawkish. There are also notable collaborations, such as "Romance Ideal", co-written with Martim Cardoso, and "Assaltaram a Gramática", a collaboration between Lulu Santos and Waly Salomão which featured guest vocals from Lulu Santos himself and Scarlet Moon. The title track, "O Passo do Lui", is an instrumental piece that pays homage to Lui, a friend of the band from Brasília, known for his ska dancing, and who is even depicted on the album cover.

Legacy

O Passo do Lui was a resounding success, selling over 250,000 copies in a short time and being certified Gold Record for 100,000 copies sold in June 1985. This was a significant leap, as the debut album had sold only 5,000 copies. The album's commercial success was exponentially boosted by Os Paralamas do Sucesso's legendary participation in the first edition of Rock in Rio, in January 1985. With two shows considered among the festival's best attractions, the band emerged from the event as one of the giants of the new generation of Brazilian rock, taking the album's tour across the country and consolidating their popularity. Considered one of the most important and superlative albums in 80s national rock, O Passo do Lui is constantly remembered by audiences and critics alike as one of the band's finest works. Its influence extends through the timelessness of its songs, with most tracks becoming classics that are still frequently played and re-recorded today. The album marked a turning point for Os Paralamas do Sucesso, establishing them as one of the most competent and innovative bands on the Brazilian music scene.
