Why This Album Matters
Certa Manhã Acordei de Sonhos Intranquilos, released in 2009, marks the fourth studio album in the solo career of Pernambuco native Otto, presenting itself as a work of singular depth and innovation. Its essence is profoundly inspired by Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, weaving a complex tapestry between the writer's narrative and Otto's own personal experiences, as he appeared to undergo a metamorphosis himself during the album's conception and completion. This album stands out not only for its thematic introspection, but also for its rich sonic fusion. Otto skilfully made room for the convergence of distinct musical rhythms, solidified by the collaborations of talented artists such as the Mexican Julieta Venegas, São Paulo native Céu, and significant figures from the Pernambuco scene, including members of Nação Zumbi and Cordel do Fogo Encantado. Such partnerships contribute to the diversity and originality that permeate the entire project.
Context
The album's title, a transcription of the celebrated first sentence of Kafka's The Metamorphosis, reveals a context of profound turmoil for the artist. According to Otto, the 'restless dreams' that inspired the album's name reflect the challenging negotiation processes with record labels, which culminated in the decision to produce the album independently. In parallel, the creative period was marked by intense personal transformations. Otto faced criticism of his work, the end of his marriage to Alessandra Negrini, and grief over his mother's death. These traumatic experiences served as a catalyst for a true artistic and personal metamorphosis, permeating the album's sound and lyrics.
Recording
The production of Certa Manhã Acordei de Sonhos Intranquilos was overseen by Otto himself, who counted on the essential collaboration of Pupillo, drummer of Nação Zumbi. The team of musicians involved in the recording included Catatau, guitarist of the band Cidadão Instigado, and the Nação Zumbi duo, Pupillo on drums and Dengue on bass, who brought their influences and talents to the album's sonic construction.
Legacy
Considered by much of the specialised critique as the finest work in his discography, Certa Manhã Acordei de Sonhos Intranquilos solidified Otto's position as one of the most innovative and pertinent artists in contemporary Brazilian music.

Otto did the best he could with this: he produced his best album, one of the best of the year and, perhaps, of the decade in Brazil. And mind you, I never really warmed to the fellow's solo career.

"Certa Manhã Acordei de Sonhos Intranquilos" is a more organic album, with a greater influence from rock and MPB, more melodic, but without setting aside the electronic elements and the mix of rhythms that Otto has always championed.
