Raciocínio Quebrado
Parteum

Why This Album Matters
Raciocínio Quebrado, released in 2005 but finalised in 2004, represents a significant milestone in national rap, being Parteum's first solo album. The work stands out for proposing a break from the standards imposed by the media and society, challenging the linearity of thought and Brazilian music itself. The album is a manifesto of resistance, self-knowledge, and experimentation, avoiding the clichés often associated with rap of the time, such as themes of weapons, violence, and drug trafficking. Parteum chose to innovate the discourse, seeking new perspectives and themes, which established him as a revered and highly influential figure in the Brazilian rap scene.
Context
Before the release of Raciocínio Quebrado, Fábio Luiz, known as Parteum, already had a multifaceted career. A professional skateboarder between 1993 and 1999, he even lived in California, as well as working in banking and studying advertising. His immersion in music began early, being the brother of renowned rapper Rappin' Hood, from whom he learnt a great deal. Parteum had already demonstrated his talent as a producer, creating programming for Zélia Duncan's Sortimento album and contributing tracks to artists such as Tom Zé, Nação Zumbi, and Rappin' Hood himself. He was also a member of the group Mzuri Sana and had already released mixtapes, preparing the ground for his solo debut with a work of great scope and originality.
Recording
The album Raciocínio Quebrado was finalised and mastered in 2004, but its official release by Trama took place in February 2005. Parteum undertook the production of the record, with mixing and mastering handled by Vander Carneiro, at the legendary Atelier Studios, and Marcos Eagle, respectively. During the creative process, Parteum explored non-traditional structures and experimented with elements such as loops and delays in his productions. Curiously, the album title was suggested by rapper Kamau, who recognised Parteum's non-linear way of thinking, a characteristic reflected in the work's concept. The recording was carried out at Parteum's home studio at the time.
Songs
The compositions on Raciocínio Quebrado are characterised by sophisticated and subjective lyrics, typical of Parteum's style. The title track, for example, is a manifesto criticising media stereotypes and the superficiality of television entertainment, as expressed in the verses “Eu não me encaixo no perfil que a TV vende no horário nobre” and “bonecos se mexem e o nível desce”. Parteum also explores his Afro-Brazilian heritage, mentioning the “diáspora” (diaspora) and the “língua do colonizador” (coloniser's tongue), while making historical references to figures such as Zumbi dos Palmares and the Code of Hammurabi. The artist's fascination with beats and science fiction, as well as his appreciation for knowledge manifested in “Livros que tenho lido trazem luz” (Books I have been reading bring light), also permeate his lyrics, which seek innovation and creative freedom. The song "Época de Épicos" stands out with the participation of Kamau, Rick, and Napoli, and Parteum's desire to create an instrumental with repetition, inspired by Philip Glass's Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack.
Legacy
Raciocínio Quebrado quickly consolidated its position as one of the most important albums in national rap, being widely considered a classic and a masterpiece of the genre. Critical reception highlighted Parteum's originality and his ability to influence a new generation of artists, establishing him as a cult figure in the Brazilian music scene. The album is frequently included in essential Brazilian rap playlists, such as “Mestres do Rap” (Masters of Rap), “Essenciais do Rap Brasileiro” (Brazilian Rap Essentials), and “Rap Brasil Anos 2000” (Rap Brazil 2000s), attesting to its enduring relevance. In 2020, the album celebrated 15 years, and in 2024/2025, its 20th anniversary, with Parteum continuing to inspire and act as a mentor for other musicians, sharing his market vision and contributing to the hip-hop scene in various ways.
