In that same year, 1966, Portela, the samba school Paulinho da Viola had joined as a composer the previous year, would go on to win its eighteenth title at the Rio Carnival with a samba of his authorship. This period, therefore, marks Paulinho's emergence as one of samba's new talents, with deep roots in Portela and in collaboration with established figures like Elton Medeiros.
