Why This Album Matters

Matriz, Pitty's fifth studio album, released in April 2019, represents a significant milestone in her discography. The project stands out for a notable sonic exploration that distances it from her previous works, moving closer to the rich textures and rhythms of Bahian culture. This album is not only a return to her geographical roots but also a journey of artistic rediscovery. Conceived from the idea of revisiting her origins and the sonic matrix that shaped her, Pitty uses rock as a starting point to engage with new influences, reflecting on her trajectory and how her art manifests in contemporary times. Metaphorically, the artist describes the experience as that of a 'blueswoman leaving the cotton plantation' in search of new horizons, marking a 'return from an aesthetic and cultural self-exile' that became possible for various reasons.

Context

The album Matriz emerged after almost five years without the release of new material from the singer, a period that preceded an intense planning process for the Tour Matriz, which began in 2018. The recording of the album took place in parallel with the first part of this tour, allowing the songs to be composed based on the experiences generated for the shows. The project, from its conception, aimed at a reunion with Pitty's roots, as she was born and lived in Salvador until the age of 23 before moving to Rio de Janeiro to record her first album, providing a personal backdrop for the exploration of her Bahian influences.

Recording

The recording process for Matriz was divided across different locations, reflecting Pitty's journey in search of her sonic origins. Part of the album was recorded at Estúdio Tambor, in Rio de Janeiro, while other sessions took place in São Paulo and in Salvador, the artist's hometown. Pitty's band, comprising Martin Mendonça on guitars, Guilherme Almeida on bass, Daniel Weksler on drums, and Paulo Kishimoto on various instruments such as pianos, synthesizers, Hammond organ, and percussion, played a fundamental role in the album's sound. Pitty herself contributed with vocals, backing vocals, piano, vocal percussion, and handclaps, solidifying the work's musical identity.

Songs

With thirteen tracks, the Matriz repertoire is essentially new and original, but it also features two re-recordings that harmoniously integrate with the album's concept. Among the collaborations, the participations of Lazzo Matumbi, Nancy Vieira, and Larissa Luz on the songs 'Noite Inteira' and 'Sol Quadrado' stand out, as well as the band BaianaSystem on the track 'Roda'. 'Noite Inteira' also incorporates a sampler of Dorival Caymmi's composition 'Noite de Temporal', connecting the work to a classic of Brazilian music. One of the re-recordings is 'Motor', a blues-rock composed by Tiago Oliveira in 2012 and released by the band Maglore, which gained a new dimension in Pitty's voice. The other re-recording is 'Para o Grande Amor', an emotional tribute to the Bahian friend and composer Peu Souza, who passed away prematurely. The song 'Te Conecta', released as a promotional single for the tour, stands out for its reggae and dub-influenced sound and introspective lyrics about the search for inner connection, exemplifying the album's sonic and thematic diversity.

Legacy

Matriz was critically acclaimed, receiving positive reviews that highlighted its depth and originality. Silvio Essinger, from O Globo, praised the effectiveness and balance of Pitty's forays into reggae on tracks like 'Te Conecta' and 'Sol Quadrado', highlighting the album's impressive sonic depth and international production polish. Paulo Floro, from O Grito! magazine, even classified it as the best album of Pitty's career, celebrating the artist's reunion with her African roots and her phase of maturity and confidence. The recognition extended to awards, with Matriz being chosen as one of the 25 best Brazilian albums of the first half of 2019 by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. In terms of commercial performance, Matriz's singles also achieved success: 'Noite Inteira' reached the 13th position on the iTunes Chart Brasil and 3rd in Bolivia, while 'Te Conecta' reached the 4th position on iTunes Brasil and 1st in Bolivia. 'Te Conecta' also accumulated over 1 million views on YouTube and received a 'gold single' certification for over 8 million streams, equivalent to approximately 40,000 copies sold, consolidating the work's resonance and impact.
