Why This Album Matters

Voo de Coração, the debut album by singer Ritchie, released in 1983 by Epic Records, marked a significant moment in Brazilian music. Produced by Vinyl, the record quickly became a sales phenomenon, establishing itself as one of the biggest successes of its era. Its pop sound, with electronic and melodic influences, captured the attention of both the public and critics. This debut work not only introduced Ritchie to the music scene, but also showcased a fusion of talents, resulting in captivating compositions and innovative arrangements. The album is a testament to the musical effervescence of the 80s in Brazil, blending elements of MPB with new pop and rock trends.

Context

The release of Voo de Coração in 1983 occurred during a period of great effervescence for Brazilian pop music. The album stood out as the most commercially successful national debut record since the acclaimed work by Secos & Molhados, underlining its relevance in the landscape of the time. For the conception of the album, Ritchie brought together a notable cast of musicians, with collaborations from figures such as Lulu Santos, Liminha, Lobão, and even the renowned Steve Hackett, former guitarist of Genesis, which lent a unique instrumental and creative richness to the project.

Recording

The production of Voo de Coração was handled by Vinyl, with Ritchie taking on vocals, keyboard, and flute. The album's instrumentation featured the participation of various talents: Lulu Santos on guitars for tracks such as "No Olhar" and "Casanova", and on E-bow for "Tudo Que Eu Quero", Liminha on bass and guitar, and Steve Hackett, former guitarist of Genesis, contributing guitar to the title track "Voo de Coração". Lauro Salazar was responsible for piano and synthesizers, utilising equipment such as Jupiter8, Prophet10, and Rhythm Composer, while Lobão took on drums. Zé Luis on saxophone and Chico Batera on percussion for "Pelo Interfone" complemented the band, which also featured Ana Leuzinger, Marisa Fossa, Paulinho Soledade, and Sonia Bonfá on backing vocals. The mixing was carried out by Carlos Eduardo Andrade, with Anibal and Vitor as recording engineers.

Songs

Voo de Coração features a repertoire that became emblematic, with several songs achieving great popularity. Among the highlights are "No Olhar", "A Vida Tem Dessas Coisas", and especially "Menina Veneno", which became one of Ritchie's biggest hits. The song "Casanova" also gained recognition by being chosen as the opening theme for the soap opera Champagne. The majority of the album's compositions are the result of the partnership between Ritchie and Bernardo Vilhena, with exceptions such as "Preço do Prazer", signed solely by Ritchie, and "A Carta (The Letter)", authored by Thompson. The 25th-anniversary commemorative edition, released in 2008, included significant bonus tracks, such as "Baby meu Bem (Te Amo)", the B-side of the first single, and "Mi Niña Veneno", the Spanish version of the hit "Menina Veneno".

Legacy

Voo de Coração achieved tremendous success, with estimated sales between 700,000 and 1.2 million copies, cementing its place as one of the most successful debut albums in the history of Brazilian music. Its impact was so significant that it was considered the most commercially successful national debut record since the emergence of Secos & Molhados. The album's recognition extended over time, culminating in the release of a 25th-Anniversary Commemorative Edition in December 2008. This version was remastered from the original tapes, featuring four bonus tracks, including recordings from the original 1983 sessions and an acoustic re-recording of the title track with the participation of Paulinho Moska, reinforcing the permanence and importance of Ritchie's work in the music scene.
