Why This Album Matters
The album Roberto Carlos of 1972 represents a definitive landmark in the King's career, solidifying his image as the foremost interpreter of Brazilian romantic song. Permanently moving away from the last resonances of his soul phase, this record underlines a profound artistic maturity, revealing a pulsating and introspective lyrical vein. It is a work that not only captivated the public, but also demonstrated the artist's ability to explore existential and confessional themes with unparalleled sensitivity. Recognised by many analysts as one of the most melancholic and lyrical works of his career, the album stands out for the emotional depth of its compositions. The ballads and songs present here reveal a Roberto Carlos in full command of his art, capable of expressing universal feelings of love, loss, and reflection, making this record a fundamental piece in his discography and in the history of MPB.
Context
Launched in December 1972, this album emerged during a period when Roberto Carlos had already established a solid bridge between his initial phase linked to Jovem Guarda and a more romantic universe, which had begun more explicitly on the previous record. At that time, the artist was living a phase of great personal stability, married and a father of three children, including his stepdaughter Ana Paula. These family experiences and the search for new maturity are directly reflected in the themes and lyrical depth of the songs, which explore issues of coexistence and personal reflections.
Recording
The production of the album Roberto Carlos of 1972 was handled by Evandro Ribeiro, a key figure in CBS's sound at the time. Recording sessions took place between June and September 1972, utilising a modern 8-channel system. The work was divided between the CBS record label's studios in Rio de Janeiro and New York, aiming for a sophisticated sound of high technical quality. The musical accompaniment featured the participation of Banda RC-7 and a select group of studio musicians, who formed a string and brass orchestra. The conducting and arrangements were predominantly by maestro Jimmy Wisner, with a notable exception for tracks conducted by Chiquinho de Morais and Horace Hott, adding distinct nuances to the instrumentation. Engineers Eugênio in Rio de Janeiro and Laico and Waller in New York were responsible for sound capture, while the visual identity was provided by Carlos E. Lacerda's illustration on the cover and Armando Canuto's photography on the back cover.
Songs
The 1972 album is a treasure of songs that became timeless classics, profoundly marking MPB. Among the greatest successes, tracks such as "Por Amor", "A Distância", "A Montanha", and "O Divã" stand out, resonating with emotional intensity. The work is notable for the inclusion of deeply felt ballads and existential/confessional compositions, such as "À Janela" and the aforementioned "O Divã", which invite introspection. "Como Vai Você", composed by the brothers Antônio Marcos and Mário Marcos, emerges as the album's greatest highlight, becoming one of the major hits of Roberto Carlos's career. In addition to the romantic and confessional ballads, the record also explores the complexity of family relationships in "Quando as Crianças Saírem de Férias", a reflection on coexistence. The work concludes with the reflective folk song "Agora Eu Sei", a partnership between Edson Ribeiro and Helena dos Santos, which solidifies the album's lyrical and mature proposition.
Legacy
Roberto Carlos of 1972 was a resounding success, consolidating the singer's position in the pantheon of Brazilian music. According to Nopem, it was the best-selling album in Brazil in 1973, a testament to its immediate impact and massive public acceptance. Besides the impressive sales, the record generated classics that became eternal in the country's musical repertoire. The track "Como Vai Você" received a particularly effusive reception, being the sixth most played song on Brazilian radio in 1972. This song, as well as "Por Amor", "A Distância", and "A Montanha", transcended time, remaining as references in Roberto Carlos's work and being re-recorded and interpreted by various artists throughout the decades, which demonstrates the album's lasting influence on Brazilian musical culture.

The love that doesn't appear on the previous album of our journey, the heavy Scalene - Éter (473), is abundant here. Let's talk about the ones that are worthwhile. 'Como vai você': A great song, it's not Roberto's and Nelson Gonçalves's version is much better. 'À Distância' and 'Por amor' are great, you can listen to them really loudly.
