Why This Album Matters

Bahia Fantástica, Rodrigo Campos's second album released in 2012, represents a fundamental landmark in the artist's trajectory, solidifying him as a singular voice in the contemporary Brazilian music scene. Distancing himself from the autobiographical nature of his previous work, Campos delves into a 'Bahia' that is, at once, a geographical setting and an intimate, imaginary space, using it as a guiding thread for his subjective chronicles and fantastic characters. The album's sound is a rich and innovative tapestry, blending MPB with touches of pop, rock, jazz, soul, and afrobeat, enriched by acoustic guitars that share space with electric guitars and psychedelic horns. This experimental fusion, combined with his ability to depict environments and characters through descriptive verses, secured Bahia Fantástica a prominent place and critical recognition as a creative advancement in his work.

Context

The release of Bahia Fantástica marked a significant turning point in Rodrigo Campos's career. After the success of his debut album, São Mateus Nem É Um Lugar Assim Tão Longe (2009), which narrated his childhood and youth experiences in São Paulo's periphery, the artist faced a period of 'creative depression'. It was after his move to Pinheiros, in São Paulo, that compositions began to flow again, driven by a new detachment from his origins.

Recording

The production of Bahia Fantástica took place between 2010 and 2012, under the artistic direction of Romulo Fróes and production by Gustavo Lenza, who was also responsible for recording and mixing the album. The record was mastered by Felipe Tichauer at Red Traxx Mastering Studio, with vinyl versions featuring additional mastering by Carlos "Cacá" Lima at YB Music studios and Direct Metal Mastering by Rand. The recording sessions featured a select group of renowned musicians from the São Paulo scene, who contributed to the album's unique sound. Among them were Kiko Dinucci on guitar, Marcelo Cabral on bass and string arrangements, Maurício Fleury on keyboards (Wurlitzer, Hammond, piano, Pro-one synthesizer), Maurício Takara on drums, and Thiago França on horns (tenor saxophone, flute, EWI). This team of collaborators, many of whom are central figures in São Paulo's effervescent avant-garde, gave the work an instrumental richness and a particular flavour, with a Brazilian sauce and hints of afrobeat.

Songs

Lyrically, Bahia Fantástica deepens Rodrigo Campos's narrative technique, which builds its songs around characters. This time, these characters move through a Bahian setting, which reveals itself more as a state of mind or an inner geography than a strictly physical location, influenced by the artist's brief, but intense, time in the state. The lyrics, notable for their 'subjective chronicles' nature, project scenes and paint environments with a unique style, drawing from Campos's personal experiences and inspirations, but treated within a universal language. The album's instrumentation is a highlight, with acoustic and electric guitars intertwining, and psychedelic horns that flirt with jazz, pop, and rock. Tracks like "Princesa do Mar" stand out with a vibrant afrobeat rhythm, while "Morte na Bahia" is punctuated by striking percussion, both enriched by vocal collaborations from Luisa Maita and Criolo on "Ribeirão", as well as Juçara Marçal on "Jardim Japão" and "Sou de Salvador". The song "Elias", in turn, returns to the landscapes of São Paulo's periphery, evidencing Campos's ability to move between different settings with his musical narrative.

Legacy

Bahia Fantástica solidified Rodrigo Campos's position in the Brazilian music scene, receiving international recognition with a mention in The New York Times, which named him one of the most important singers of his generation in São Paulo. In Brazil, the album was critically acclaimed, receiving 4 out of 5 stars from Estadão newspaper and 3 out of 5 stars from Folha de S. Paulo. The work was praised by specialised outlets like Música Instantânea, which considered it a significant leap from Campos's previous work, highlighting its comprehensive and less hermetic sound compared to other artists from the São Paulo scene at the time. Even a decade after its original release in 2012, Bahia Fantástica demonstrated continuous vitality, being reissued on vinyl in 2023. This reissue attests not only to its lasting relevance, but also to its role as a turning point in Campos's lyrical and aesthetic inspiration, expanding his sound from samba to incorporate influences from Black American music, such as the soul of Curtis Mayfield.
