Context
Before Skylab IV, Rogério Skylab had already established his reputation as a "cadaver within MPB", forging an independent career marked by a singular style that blends marginal poetry, sound experimentation and intense performances. His previous albums, Skylab I, II and III, already paved the way for this minimalist, repetitive and eclectic aesthetic, which attracts a loyal cult following. Skylab's persona, widely disseminated by his legendary interviews on "Programa do Jô", helped solidify his image as a transgressor and thinker. In a sometimes complacent musical landscape, Skylab emerged as a counterpoint, building his work "by sheer grit and determination", with a 'do-it-yourself' approach that manifested itself from the production of his records to their distribution.
Recording
The recording of Skylab IV took place in January 2003, at Estúdio Rock House, in São Conrado, Rio de Janeiro. The most distinctive characteristic of the process was the decision to record the album "live without an audience", an approach that Rogério Skylab would adopt in his subsequent studio releases. This choice aimed to capture the spontaneity and energy of the band in real time, resulting in a raw and authentic sound. Rogério Skylab took on the album's production, demonstrating his artistic control over the work. The agility of the recording is notable, with Skylab reporting having arrived at the studio at midday and leaving that evening with the album ready. Mastering was handled by Luiz Tornaghi at Estúdio Vison, while the cover art, which features Skylab's nephew, was created by Luísa Bousada, with photography by Solange Venturi.

The fourteen tracks on Skylab IV are a showcase of Rogério Skylab's lyrical universe, characterised by grotesque, shocking descriptions and biting allusions to popular culture, permeated by nihilism and dark humour. Songs like "Parafuso na Cabeça" and "Mictório" stood out, being the first to receive music videos, which marked a new moment in the artist's career. A notable aspect of the album is the inclusion of two bonus tracks, "Câncer no Cu" and "Chico Xavier & Roberto Carlos", available only on the free download version. Skylab omitted them from the original physical release, in an act of 'self-censorship', considering them excessively controversial, even by his own standards. This decision highlights the challenging nature of his lyrics and his constant exploration of the limits of artistic expression. Furthermore, the song "Música para Paralítico" would later receive a live version on the album Skylab IX, under the alternative title "Porrada na Cabeça", demonstrating the vitality of his compositions.
Legacy
Skylab IV solidified its place as a cult classic of Brazilian independent rock, being recognised for its importance in the music scene. The website La Cumbuca included the album at 42nd place on its list of the "200 Best National Albums of the 2000s", alongside other works by the artist such as Skylab II, V and VII. The album's lasting relevance is evidenced by recent actions, such as the launch of a music video for the track "Mictório" in February 2025, almost twenty-two years after its original release, and the re-release of the song as a standalone single. In March 2026, Skylab IV was the subject of a special 20th-anniversary edition by Monstro Discos, containing three outtakes and resulting in a commemorative tour across Brazil, consolidating its status as a timeless and celebrated work. The album's availability for free download on Skylab's official website also contributes to its accessibility and the continuous engagement of its audience.

It's not something the vast majority of the public will enjoy. But I believe the weight of these lyrics perfectly complements what the artist intended to present.
