Why This Album Matters

Um Violão em Primeiro Plano, released in 1971, is an album that encapsulates the instrumental mastery of Rosinha de Valença, one of the most important female figures in Música Popular Brasileira and one of the instrumental pioneers of bossa nova. The album's title already suggests the prominent role of the guitar, an instrument on which Rosinha excelled with impressive technique from an early age, being widely recognised as an excellent instrumentalist. Her approach to the guitar was crucial for the development of the instrumental strand of bossa nova. This work reflects the essence of an artist who dedicated her life to music, elevating the guitar to a prominent position on the Brazilian scene. It is a testament to her singular ability and her fundamental role in promoting instrumental music in Brazil, offering the listener a deep immersion in the sound of her guitar.

Context

Before the release of Um Violão em Primeiro Plano in 1971, Rosinha de Valença had already built a remarkable career. Discovered by Sérgio Porto, she moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1963, where she quickly recorded her first album and distinguished herself on television programmes, often alongside Baden Powell, a master who influenced her style. Her international career began early, touring the United States with Sérgio Mendes and his group Brasil 65, and later across Europe as a soloist, disseminating Brazilian music in various countries. After years of tours and stints abroad, including one in Paris on a scholarship, Rosinha returned to Brazil in 1970, engaging in movements aimed at promoting national instrumental music. Um Violão em Primeiro Plano, therefore, emerged in this context of her return and her dedication to Brazilian instrumental music.
