Context
The album Revoluções por Minuto emerged in Brazil during the vacuum of re-democratisation, a period of great cultural effervescence and social and political transformations. The military dictatorship was ending, and Brazilian rock gained new prominence, with youth expressing their ideas and demands more freely. It was in this setting, characterised by gel-spiked hair, acid-coloured clothes, futuristic keyboards, and a rebellious yet danceable beat, that RPM emerged. The band, formed by Paulo Ricardo (vocals/bass) and Luiz Schiavon (keyboards) in 1983, had already released an EP in 1984 with the tracks "Louras Geladas" and "Revoluções por Minuto", which already indicated the direction of their sound. The group's line-up underwent several changes before and during the album's recording, such as the departure of drummer Júnior Moreno, then 14 years old, and the brief stint of Charles Gavin (who would later join Titãs) before the arrival of Paulo Pagni, known as P.A., who would consolidate his position on drums.
Recording
The album Revoluções por Minuto was released in May 1985 by the Epic label. Production was handled by Luiz Carlos Maluly, who managed to bring an international sheen to the band's sound without them losing their Brazilian accent. The tracks "Louras Geladas" and "Revoluções por Minuto", previously released on an earlier EP, were recorded with the aid of a drum machine, highlighting the exploration of electronic elements in the group's sound. A notable fact during the recordings was the arrival of drummer Paulo Pagni (P.A.) midway through the process, which explains his absence from the cover photo, which depicts Paulo Ricardo, Luiz Schiavon, and Fernando Deluqui. The album cover, a work by Alex Flemming at Luiz Schiavon's invitation, was initially rejected by the record label, which preferred a more 'boy band' image. However, the band insisted and managed to get the artwork accepted. Flemming used photoliths and silkscreens based on an original photo by Rui Mendes, creating the distinctive lines of the image with ink-soaked matches and developing an original font for the band's name, which became their trademark.

Revoluções por Minuto is an album full of songs that became anthems of Brazilian rock, notably "Olhar 43", "Louras Geladas", "Rádio Pirata", and "A Cruz e a Espada". "Louras Geladas", for instance, was the song that introduced the band to the general public, with its striking riff and catchy chorus, becoming a hit in discos and on the radio. The title track, "Revoluções por Minuto", stands out for its irony and social and political criticism of 1980s Brazil, during a post-dictatorship transition period. Composed by Luiz Schiavon and Paulo Ricardo, the lyrics address themes such as globalisation, social problems, and disillusionment with national myths, using verses like "Agora a China bebe Coca-Cola aqui na esquina cheiram cola" and references to Brasília and guerrilla rumours. Despite initially being censored due to a verse, the song became a band manifesto and an anthem for urban youth seeking their place. Other songs like "Olhar 43" explore the universe of seduction and desire, featuring the melodic complexity of Schiavon's keyboards, while "A Cruz e a Espada" demonstrated RPM's capability for deeper compositions, with Roberto Sion participating on clarinet and Luiz Carlos Maluly on acoustic guitar.

Legacy
Revoluções por Minuto was an unprecedented phenomenon in the Brazilian recording industry, propelling RPM to stardom and selling over a million copies, a significant figure for the time. The album was widely recognised by critics, being considered one of the 100 greatest albums in Brazilian music by Rolling Stone Brasil magazine, occupying the 99th position. The resounding success of the songs "Olhar 43", "Louras Geladas", "Rádio Pirata", and "A Cruz e a Espada" secured the group immense prestige nationwide. The album had a significant cultural impact, serving as the soundtrack for a country in transition and influencing generations of musicians by blending attitude and technology in Brazilian pop rock. In recognition of its importance, Revoluções por Minuto was remastered and re-released in 2008 as part of the box set Revolução: RPM 25 Anos. This re-edition also included other albums and a DVD of the Rádio Pirata ao Vivo concert, originally released on VHS in 1987 and certified gold by ABPD in its 2011 DVD version.
