Why This Album Matters

Released in 1991, Arise is the fourth studio album by the Brazilian band Sepultura and marks a crucial phase in the evolution of their sound. While maintaining the death/thrash metal style of its predecessor, Beneath the Remains, the album stands out due to a clear experimental inclination, incorporating elements of industrial music, hardcore punk and Latin percussion, which would become hallmarks of the band. With Arise, Sepultura demonstrated a more measured sound, with drummer Igor Cavalera exploring groove-laden rhythms. Subtle touches of industrial music are perceptible through the use of samples and sound effects, evidencing influences from bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten, The Young Gods and Ministry. This fusion of genres and the boldness in experimenting consolidated Arise as a fundamental work and widely considered by many fans to be the group's best album.

Context

Following the recording of Arise, Sepultura embarked on an extensive world tour, the largest to date for the band. However, the promotional period was marked by significant incidents in Brazil that shaped public perception of rock and of the band itself. In May 1991, a concert in São Paulo, at Praça Charles Miller, attracted a crowd of 30,000 people, far exceeding police expectations, resulting in injuries and arrests, and culminating in one person being shot dead. This event, coupled with another fatal incident at a Ramones show a week earlier, generated enormous media repercussions, creating a strong anti-rock sentiment throughout the country.

Recording

The recording of Arise took place in August 1990, when the band travelled to Florida. Scott Burns resumed his role as producer and sound engineer, this time working with the advantage of being at Morrisound, a studio known and well-equipped for Sepultura's musical style. Roadrunner Records provided a budget of $40,000, which allowed for a high-level production. This investment was reflected, for instance, in the dedication of a full week of work between Iggor Cavalera and Burns to test tunings and microphone placement for the drum kit, ensuring the desired sound quality for the album.

Songs

Arise showcased the emergence of Latin percussion and 'tribal' drumming that would later characterise the band, notably on the track "Altered State". Sepultura's longstanding passion for hardcore punk also manifests prominently on tracks such as "Subtraction" and "Desperate Cry". Three singles were extracted from the album: "Arise", "Dead Embryonic Cells" and "Under Siege (Regnum Irae)". The music video for "Arise", filmed in Death Valley, showed the band performing in an apocalyptic setting and images of a Christ-like figure wearing a gas mask, which led to its ban from MTV America. In contrast, the video for "Dead Embryonic Cells" achieved wide rotation on MTV, helping the band reach new audiences, and subsequently, the song was included on the Liberty City Hardcore radio station in the game Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned, with Max Cavalera as DJ.

Legacy

Upon its release, Arise received widespread acclaim, with Brazilian and international press praising the band's evolution and compositional skill. Magazines such as Hard Rock, Kerrang! and Metal Forces published positive reviews, while major British periodicals such as Melody Maker and NME dedicated extensive articles to the group, with one Melody Maker journalist even suggesting that Sepultura could become bigger than their rivals, Slayer. Commercially, Arise was a success, being Sepultura's first album to chart on Billboard, reaching position 119. It was also the first to receive certification, achieving gold status in Indonesia in 1992, and by 1993, it had already sold over 1 million units worldwide. In 2001, it achieved silver certification in the United Kingdom. Over the years, the album continued to be revered, with Q magazine describing it as 'their thrash watermark' and Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic calling it 'a death metal classic' that had aged surprisingly well. Dan Marsicano of About.com elected it as the band's 'magnum opus'. Furthermore, Arise was included in prestigious books such as 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before I Die and Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time.
