Why This Album Matters

Quadra, Sepultura's fifteenth studio album, released on 7 February 2020 by Nuclear Blast, is a conceptual work that delves deeply into numerology and the meanings of the number "four," as described in the Quadrivium. The central concept, developed by guitarist Andreas Kisser, is inspired by the Quadrivium of Hellenic universities, which encompassed the four arts: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. The word, derived from the Latin 'Quadrivium' (four ways), also extends to the meaning of a 'sports court,' with Kisser reflecting on the 'courts' that shape our identities, cultures, laws, and beliefs. This philosophical approach enriches the sonic experience, offering a dense exploration of the formation of societies and relationships.

Recording

Sepultura opted to record Quadra in Sweden, repeating their partnership with producer Jens Bogren, who had previously worked with the band on their earlier album, Machine Messiah. Bogren's production and the band's performance were praised for their balance, resulting in a powerful and cohesive sound.

Songs

Quadra's 12 tracks were meticulously divided into four sections, each containing three songs, exploring different facets of the band's sound. The first section revisits Sepultura's classic thrash metal, while the second delves into groove metal and percussion, reminiscent of the album Roots. The third part incorporates progressive elements, inspired by the track "Iceberg Dances" from Machine Messiah, and the fourth section features more melodic and symphonic passages, echoing "Machine Messiah" itself. This ambitious structure allowed the band to explore a vast range of musical textures. Vocalist Derrick Green highlighted Quadra as the album he is most proud of, emphasising the intense work and the confluence of past elements that culminated in this strong and mature work.

Legacy

Quadra achieved notable success, becoming Sepultura's most successful album since Against in 1998. It charted in 17 countries, reaching the top 20 in seven of them. The album also marked a historic milestone for the band in Germany and Switzerland, surpassing the positions of Roots and reaching 5th and 13th place, respectively. Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive. Thom Jurk of AllMusic stated that Quadra "is Sepultura's first album to truly match in quality its classic trilogy," praising its "heavy, meaty, and adventurous" songs and Green's definitive performance. Dom Lawson of Blabbermouth considered the album "one of their finest records," highlighting the band at the peak of its creative and musical power. Recognition extended to inclusions in important lists, such as Collector's Room's Top 50 best Brazilian metal albums of all time and its election by Metal Hammer magazine as the 30th best metal album of 2020.
