His strong temperament and frequent disagreements with the phonographic industry contributed to a phase of artistic ostracism. It was in this context that the LP was released, amidst a career that was entering an erratic and challenging period.
Recording
The album Tem Que Acontecer, released by Continental in 1976, was produced by journalist Roberto Moura. Arrangements were handled by João de Aquino and Lindolfo Gaya, and the instrumental team featured notable musicians such as Laércio de Freitas on piano, Abel Ferreira on saxophone, Paschoal Meirelles on drums, Altamiro Carrilho on flutes and Marçal on percussion.

Tem Que Acontecer is characterised by a high-quality original repertoire, exploring samba with influences from other musical styles. Tracks like the poignant "Até Outro Dia", the intrepid "O Que Pintar, Pintou" and the hopeful "Quanto Mais" featuring the Golden Boys and As Gatas on backing vocals, illustrate the album's depth. The album's title track, "Tem Que Acontecer", is a bitter ballad with a nylon-string guitar arrangement, whose lyrics reflect the impotence associated with fatalism, in the face of life's transience. Other songs such as "Que Loucura", a homage to the poet Torquato Neto, and "Cada Lugar Na Sua Coisa", also stand out, showcasing the "insane lucidity" of an artist who seemed to live on the edge.
Legacy
Despite garnering critical acclaim at the time, the album Tem Que Acontecer did not achieve the desired commercial success and failed to reverse the decline in Sérgio Sampaio's career. The record consigned the artist to the ranks of MPB's "malditos", precisely because it did not achieve the expected impact. After its release, Sampaio experienced artistic ostracism, resorting to performing on the alternative circuit. However, CD reissues, such as the Discobertas Series, and posthumous recognition, attest to the lasting value of Tem Que Acontecer, which is today considered a masterpiece in the singer-songwriter's discography.
