Context
The band Som Imaginário was conceived in the early 1970s, in Rio de Janeiro, with the initial proposition of being the backing group for the renowned singer Milton Nascimento. Wagner Tiso, Nascimento's neighbour and musical colleague, was the originator of this line-up, bringing together musician friends for the project. After a year of intense rehearsals in 1969, the group made its debut in February 1970, at Teatro Opinião, accompanying Milton Nascimento in the acclaimed show "Milton Nascimento, ah, e o Som Imaginário". Shortly afterwards, during a season at the Sucata nightclub, the talented Rio-born guitarist Fredera joined the line-up, solidifying the sextet that would record the first album.
Recording
Som Imaginário's debut album was released in 1970, following an invitation from producer Mariozinho Rocha. The recording featured Fredera on guitar, Wagner Tiso on piano, Robertinho Silva on drums, Luiz Alves on bass, Tavito on rhythm guitar and Zé Rodrix on organ, forming the configuration that shaped the band's original sound.
Songs
The repertoire of the eponymous 1970 album was entirely original, featuring a mix of compositions in Portuguese and English that reflected the group's inventiveness. Among the tracks that stood out and became icons of Brazilian psychedelia are "Feira moderna", a song that the band had already performed at the International Song Festival, as well as "Morse", "Super-God", "Sábado" and "Hey, man".
