Why This Album Matters

Pergunte a Quem Conhece, released in 1989, marks a crucial moment in Brazilian music as the first solo album by the duo Thaíde & DJ Hum and one of the pillars of nascent hip-hop in Brazil. The album stands out for more comprehensively introducing the aesthetics and themes of rap to a broader audience in the country, solidifying the foundations of a genre that would come to have profound social and cultural relevance. With sharp rhymes and productions that mixed the rawness of hip-hop with Brazilian musical elements, the album presented an authentic sound, representative of São Paulo's peripheries. It is a time capsule, revealing the essence of national hip-hop from the 80s and the concerns of a generation, addressing social issues and urban daily life with direct and impactful language. It is a work that, although rooted in hip-hop, resonates within the panorama of Brazilian popular music for its originality and for giving a voice to narratives previously little explored in album format. Its importance lies in the courage to present a new and challenging style, paving the way for the musical diversity that would follow.

Context

Thaíde (Altair Gonçalves) and DJ Hum (Humberto Martins) met at parties in São Paulo in the 1980s. Hum was already working as a DJ in various nightclubs, while Thaíde was a breakdancer and beginning to develop his rhymes. Before the release of Pergunte a Quem Conhece, the duo participated in the compilation Hip Hop Cultura de Rua in 1988, with the tracks "Corpo Fechado" and "Homens da Lei". This compilation is often considered the first Brazilian hip-hop album. The prior experience helped consolidate the duo within the nascent national rap scene, preparing the ground for their debut album the following year.

Recording

The album Pergunte a Quem Conhece was produced by André Jung and Nasi, both members of the São Paulo rock band Ira!. This unusual collaboration between rock icons and hip-hop pioneers reflects an openness and experimentation common in the musical landscape of the time, reminiscent of the genre fusion that marked the beginning of hip-hop in New York in the 80s. The album's production blended the use of samples, a technique that became popular in hip-hop from 1986 onwards, with acoustic instrumentation on some tracks. For instance, "(Cláudio) Eu Tive Um Sonho" contains a sample from Just Ice's song "Latoya", while tracks like "Consciência" and "Coisas do Amor" featured the assistance of acoustic instruments. This hybrid approach was notable for Brazilian musical production in the 80s, considering the challenges and the difficulty of access to information and technologies of the time.

Songs

The album features a series of tracks that became emblematic. "Corpo Fechado", for example, had already been released on the compilation Hip Hop Cultura de Rua and is one of Thaíde's compositions in partnership with Marcos Telesforo, standing out for its powerful lyrics and assertion of identity and resistance. "(Cláudio) Eu Tive Um Sonho" is a moving tribute to a friend of the duo who passed away before the album's release. Meanwhile, the track "Coisas do Amor" demonstrates thematic versatility, addressing a more romantic and personal side, contrasting with the social critiques present in other compositions. Other songs such as "Consciência" and "Final dos Tempos" bring reflections on social problems and the reality of the streets, with Thaíde exploring life in the favela and the lack of justice.

Legacy

Pergunte a Quem Conhece is widely recognised as a fundamental milestone for national rap. The album solidified the duo Thaíde & DJ Hum as pioneers of Brazilian hip-hop, setting a standard for the scene that was to come. It is frequently cited as a benchmark for national rap, with its insightful lyrics and innovative productions that inspired generations of artists. The album's importance transcends its release, being considered by many the "Holy Grail" of national hip-hop, and an essential item for collectors and for understanding the evolution of rap and street culture in Brazil.
