Why This Album Matters

Passarim, released in 1987 by Verve Records, is a landmark in Antônio Carlos Jobim's discography, showcasing an intimate and familial collaboration that resonates in its sound. The album stands out due to the presence of "A Banda Nova", a collective of musicians that included Jobim's wife, Ana, his children Paulo and Elizabeth, as well as names such as Jaques and Paula Morelenbaum, and Danilo and Simone Caymmi, lending it a unique and personal atmosphere. This work reflects Jobim's compositional mastery, while offering a rich tapestry of arrangements and interpretations, enhanced by the participation of diverse talents. The union of generations and the group's cohesion are central elements that define Passarim's musical identity, making it a captivating album for fans of MPB and the Maestro's work.

Recording

The album Passarim was recorded at the same time and with the same musicians who participated in Inédito, consolidating a period of intense creative activity for Tom Jobim. The ensemble of artists who brought the album to life and subsequently presented it on tour was known as A Banda Nova, a group that featured the familiar presence of Ana, Jobim's wife, and his children Paulo and Elizabeth, as well as renowned collaborators such as Jaques Morelenbaum, Paula Morelenbaum, Danilo Caymmi, and Simone Caymmi. On some labels and the back cover, Passarim was even credited to "Antonio Carlos Jobim e A Banda Nova". The title track, "Passarim", had its instrumental and Portuguese vocal versions produced in 1985 for the soundtrack of the miniseries O tempo e o vento, by TV Globo, with the instrumental version and choirs serving as the opening theme. Another song from the album, the instrumental version of "Anos Dourados", also featured in the opening of the eponymous 1986 miniseries. The album's musical production was handled by Paulo Jobim and Jaques Morelenbaum, while the cover painting was by Elizabeth Jobim, his daughter.

Songs

Passarim is composed of thirteen songs, a number that includes both the Portuguese and English versions of the title track and of "Anos Dourados / Looks Like December". The US CD edition featured all thirteen tracks, with the Portuguese versions of "Passarim" and "Anos Dourados" listed as bonus tracks, while the original vinyl versions featured eleven tracks, alternating between the Portuguese or English versions of the dual songs. Among the tracks, notable compositional collaborations include "Looks Like December", which brings together A.C. Jobim and Chico Buarque, and "Isabella", a partnership between Gil Goldstein and Paulo Jobim. The album also incorporates classics such as "Fascinatin' Rhythm" by George and Ira Gershwin, and features contributions from other notable Brazilian composers like Ronaldo Bastos, Paulo César Pinheiro, and Danilo Caymmi, who co-wrote "Brazil Nativo" with Pinheiro.
