Tom Zé
2000

Why This Album Matters
Tom Zé is recognised as one of the most unique figures in Brazilian Popular Music, distinguished by his irreverent style and experimental approach to musical composition. His works are marked by inventiveness and creativity, frequently incorporating unconventional sonorities and unusual objects in his recordings. As one of the essential names of the tropicalista movement, Tom Zé consolidated his position as an alternative and influential voice in the Brazilian music landscape. His albums reflect a continuous search for sonic innovations, challenging the boundaries of the genre and proposing new artistic languages.
Context
The recording of Jogos de Armar (Faça Você Mesmo) in 2000 occurred during a period of renewed prominence for Tom Zé. After a phase of lower visibility in the late 1980s, the artist was rediscovered by David Byrne, former member of Talking Heads, who helped him to relaunch his career and undertake tours across Europe. The 1990s consolidated Tom Zé's global recognition, with performances in the United States and Europe. Shortly before the release of this album, in 1998, his work Com Defeito de Fabricação was acclaimed, even being chosen as one of the ten best albums of the year by The New York Times.
