The tracks reflect Tonico & Tinoco's musical identity, characterised by simplicity, joy, and the ability to move millions of fans with their interpretations. Throughout their existence, the duo was responsible for boosting caipira music in the country, becoming a reference for generations of artists. 35 Anos is, therefore, not just a compilation of great hits, but a testament to the longevity and profound connection that Tonico & Tinoco established with the Brazilian public through their genuine art.
Context
Tonico and Tinoco, brothers João Salvador Perez (Tonico) and José Salvador Perez (Tinoco), formed one of Brazil's most emblematic caipira duos, with a career that spanned 59 years, from 1935 to 1994. Born in São Paulo, they began singing as boys, learning the lyrics from local violeiros and performing at rural parties and dances. Before the album 35 Anos, the duo had already released dozens of records and had become established on radio, where they sang for years on stations such as Rádio Difusora, Rádio Nacional, Rádio Bandeirantes and Record, long before the era of LPs and the internet. Known as "A Dupla Coração do Brasil" since 1951, the brothers were masters at interpreting regional rhythms without ever abandoning their authentic style, which was widely copied in the 1950s and 1960s. The release of 35 Anos in 1977 celebrated this rich journey and the vast discography which already comprised approximately 1,000 recordings and 83 albums.
Songs
The album 35 Anos features 24 songs that are true classics of sertaneja music. Among the notable tracks are "Chico Mineiro", "Cana Verde", "Boi de Carro", "Rei do Gado", "Vingança do Soldado" and "Moreninha Linda", highlighting the repertoire that marked the duo's career. The compositions explore themes of rural daily life, romantic dramas, and saudade, striking characteristics of the modas de viola interpreted by Tonico & Tinoco. Songs such as "Chico Mineiro", by Tonico and Francisco Ribeiro, and "Sertão do Laranjinha", adapted by the duo and Capitão Furtado, show the versatility and depth of their lyrics. The album's repertoire is a reflection of the contrast between joy and sadness, present and past, life and death, that punctuated most of the duo's works.
Legacy
Tonico & Tinoco left an immense legacy for Brazilian music, being considered the greatest sertaneja duo of all time in Brazil. With 35 Anos, the duo reaffirmed their iconic status, consolidating a discography estimated to have sold between 20 million and 50 million records, with some sources indicating up to 150 million copies, and approximately 40,000 performances throughout their career. Despite the evolution of sertaneja music over the decades, Tonico & Tinoco maintained their unaltered style, serving as a model and influence for countless musicians. Even after Tonico's death in 1994, Tinoco continued his career, and the duo was honoured with the Luar do Sertão Collection by BMG in 1997, which compiled their most representative repertoire. The album 35 Anos is a fundamental piece for understanding Tonico & Tinoco's enduring influence and continuous success in Brazil's musical culture.
