His journey included running away from home at the age of 12, living as a street boy in Rio de Janeiro, serving in the Army alongside Silvio Santos, and even fighting in the Suez Canal in 1957. In the 1960s, Tony began his career as Tony Checker, lip-syncing and dancing. He lived for five years in New York, where, in addition to meeting Tim Maia, he had marginal experiences. Back in Brazil in 1969, he worked with Ed Lincoln and, in 1970, adopted the name Tony Tornado. In the same year, he achieved great notoriety by winning the Brazilian leg of the V Festival Internacional da Canção with the soul song "BR-3", solidifying his identity as one of the main disseminators of soul and funk on the national scene.
