Efêmera
Tulipa Ruiz
2010

Why This Album Matters
Released in 2010, Efêmera is the acclaimed debut album by Brazilian singer and songwriter Tulipa Ruiz, which quickly established her as one of the most original and relevant voices in the contemporary music scene. The work is a skilful fusion of MPB, pop rock, and soul, characterised by its lightness and poetic sensibility, defining what the artist herself described as "forest pop". The album stands out for the intelligence of its lyrics, which combine lyricism with a humorous outlook on everyday life, and for arrangements that balance sophistication and apparent simplicity. Tulipa Ruiz's peculiar voice, with its high notes and sweet, expressive timbre, was immediately noted, captivating critics and the public alike and marking the emergence of a new sensibility in Brazilian music.
Context
Born in Santos but raised in São Lourenço, Minas Gerais, Tulipa Ruiz had a musical immersion from childhood, influenced by a family of artists: her father, Luiz Chagas, was a journalist and guitarist for the band Isca de Polícia, which accompanied Itamar Assumpção. Before dedicating herself fully to music, Tulipa worked for almost a decade as a journalist in São Paulo, after moving to the capital at 22 to study Communication and Multimeios. Her foray into a musical career, formally initiated around 2009 with the dissemination of demos on MySpace, already demonstrated a singular voice that attracted the attention of listeners and critics, generating great anticipation for her phonographic debut. The release of Efêmera, therefore, was not merely the recording of an ascending talent, but the materialisation of an artistic trajectory that had been honed across various creative fields.
Recording
Efêmera was recorded at Estúdio YB in São Paulo, and its production was overseen by Gustavo Ruiz, the singer's brother, who also contributed guitars and mixed the album. Márcio Arantes acted as co-producer and participated as a musician, playing bass, guitar, and piano. The album's credits are robust, featuring expressive names in Brazilian music. Among the musicians who contributed to the album's unique sound are Luiz Chagas (Tulipa's father) on guitar, Duani Martins on drums, and Dudu Tsuda on Hammond organ or piano. The album also featured notable special appearances, such as Kassin on bass, Stéphane San Juan on drums, and the Negresko Sis trio, comprising Anelis Assumpção, Céu, and Thalma de Freitas on vocals. The album's visual art, which complements the project's atmosphere, was illustrated with drawings by various artists connected to Tulipa, including Ná Ozzetti, Tiê, and Karina Buhr, with the cover illustration signed by Tulipa Ruiz herself.
Songs
With 11 tracks, ten of which were written (or co-written) by Tulipa, Efêmera presents a cohesive and diverse repertoire. The title track, "Efêmera", opens the album with a tropicalista atmosphere and lyrics that express the desire to prolong everyday and meaningful moments. Other highlights include "Do Amor", a romantic song with piano and acoustic guitar arrangements that create a narrative and engaging atmosphere, and "Só Sei Dançar Com Você", the romantic closing track, which quickly became one of the artist's most recognisable hits. The album transitions through sounds ranging from the bittersweet pop rock of "Às Vezes" (co-written with Luiz Chagas), with its descriptive essence, to the playful touch of "Pontual" and the fusion of MPB, opera, and electronics in "Pedrinho". The track "Brocal Dourado" evokes 80s synth pop with its synthesised beats, while "Sushi" stands out as an emotional ballad, built with concise instrumentation and warm vocals. The lyrics, in general, are "confessional fragments" that offer a journey through the creator's soul, experiences, and feelings.
Legacy
Efêmera was an immediate success, earning critical and public acclaim and solidifying Tulipa Ruiz's position as one of Brazilian music's major revelations. The album was chosen as one of the best of 2010 by *Rolling Stone* magazine and *O Globo* newspaper, and one of the best of the decade by *Folha de São Paulo*. The album's impact was amplified by its presence across various media: the title track, "Efêmera", was featured on the soundtrack of the video game FIFA 11, while "Só Sei Dançar Com Você" and "Do Amor" were included in TV Globo telenovelas, "Cheias de Charme" and "Além do Tempo", respectively. The album's success propelled a European and American tour in 2011, in addition to performances at major festivals such as SWU and Rock in Rio. Tulipa Ruiz was recognised as "Best Singer" at the Prêmio Multishow de Música Brasileira in 2011, consolidating the acknowledgement of her talent and Efêmera's lasting relevance in the music scene.
