Why This Album Matters
The album Vou Tirar Você Desse Lugar - Tributo a Odair José, released in 2006, is a seminal work in the Brazilian music scene, standing out as one of the most successful tribute albums ever produced in the country. The compilation revisits the repertoire of the iconic singer and songwriter Odair José, presenting his songs through contemporary reinterpretations by a diverse team of artists. The project had the merit of recontextualising the honoured artist's work, which, despite having been one of Brazil's biggest record sellers in previous decades, was at the time relegated to an unjust 'brega nostalgia'. This album is special for blending the popular appeal of Odair José's original compositions with the sounds of national pop-rock, indie, and MPB practised by the participating musicians. By doing so, the tribute not only celebrated Odair's relevance, but also demonstrated the timelessness and versatility of his lyrics and melodies, which continue to resonate with new generations.
Context
The 'rehabilitation' of Odair José's work had already begun some years before the tribute's release, driven by the publication of Paulo Cesar de Araújo's book Eu Não Sou Cachorro, Não - Música Popular Cafona e Ditadura Militar (2002). The historian's work sought to understand why some of Brazil's most popular singers were excluded from the 'official' historiography of MPB, showing that artists like Odair José were as persecuted by the dictatorship's Censorship as other renowned names. Odair José, throughout his career in the 70s, became notable for addressing themes considered taboo, such as prostitution, birth control, free sex, drugs, and social exclusion, using direct and popular language. This bold approach and his expressive sales contrasted with the 'serious' critics of the time, who often pejoratively labelled him 'cafona'. The tribute emerged in this scenario of rediscovery, proposing a new look at the depth and courage of his work.
Recording
The album was conceived and executive produced by Sandro Rogério Lima Belo, of the Goian independent label Allegro Discos, with initial distribution by Trama Independente. The project brought together 18 tracks, with the participation of various artists from the Brazilian music scene, from already established names to underground veterans and talents from the indie scene. The album's production was carried out with care, seeking to respect the essence of Odair José's original compositions, while allowing each artist to imprint their identity and style on the interpretations. The graphic quality of the booklet, which included photos, technical credits, and a text signed by Paulo Cesar de Araújo, was also a highlight. The album was initially released on CD and, in 2023, gained a 180g vinyl edition, with a gatefold sleeve and red vinyl, by labels such as American Records and Armazém Records.
Songs
The tribute's repertoire covered Odair José's classics, which gained new guises from the invited artists. Among the standout tracks are "Vou Tirar Você Desse Lugar", interpreted by Paulo Miklos, "Uma Lágrima" in the Pato Fu version, and "Eu, Você e a Praça", featuring Zeca Baleiro. Other notable reinterpretations include "Ela Voltou Diferente" by Mombojó, "Deixe Essa Vergonha de Lado" by Mundo Livre S/A, and "Essa Noite Você Vai Ter Que Ser Minha" by Picassos Falsos. The versions presented on the album vary from more reverent interpretations of the originals to more radical ones, which explore new sounds, from rock to pop and indie, demonstrating the versatility of Odair's compositions. The depth of Odair José's original lyrics, which dealt with social and emotional themes with an uncommon frankness for the time, was maintained and, in many cases, enhanced by the artists' new perspectives.
Legacy
The album Vou Tirar Você Desse Lugar - Tributo a Odair José had a very positive reception and was fundamental for the 'rehabilitation' and deepening of Odair José's work among the public and specialised critics. It consolidated the interest of a new generation of fans and musicians in the artist's trajectory, who was previously often pejoratively labelled. Odair José expressed his honour and happiness with the tribute, even stating that some of the best versions of his songs were featured there, highlighting the interpretations by Pato Fu, Mombojó, and Leela. In addition to giving renewed visibility to the honoured artist's work, the tribute also brought prominence to the participating artists, many of whom were from the independent circuit. The project contributed to the breaking of musical dogmas, reinforcing the idea that Brazilian music is rich and diverse, with space for the appreciation of different styles and artists. The album's influence is noted in the way musicians of new generations, such as Fred Zero Quatro of Mundo Livre S/A and Fernando Catatau of Cidadão Instigado, began to cite Odair José as a reference, recognising his pioneering spirit and the direct and simple way he communicated his messages.
