Why This Album Matters
The album A Arca de Noé, released in 1980, is a landmark in Brazilian children's music and in the work of Vinicius de Moraes. Far from being a minor work, it stands out for raising the standard of music dedicated to children, combining high-quality poetry with captivating melodies and sophisticated arrangements. Vinicius, one of Brazil's greatest poets and composers, realised an old dream by dedicating his sensibility to the children's universe, transforming poems into songs that became part of the collective imagination. This work represents a bridge between generations, introducing young children to great names in MPB and the richness of Brazilian poetry. With a playful and educational approach, the album offers a repertoire that teaches and inspires, showing that art for children can be just as complex and beautiful as that intended for adults.
Context
The poems that make up A Arca de Noé were written by Vinicius de Moraes many years before their publication, originally dedicated to his children Suzana and Pedro de Moraes. The concept of poems set to music for children had its first foray in 1970 in Italy, with the release of the album "L'Arca" and, in the same year, the book in Brazil. The Brazilian album version, however, would only be released posthumously in October 1980, approximately three months after Vinicius de Moraes' death in July of the same year, constituting a homage to his vision and talent.
Recording
The album A Arca de Noé was produced by Fernando Faro and featured arrangements by Rogério Duprat and Toquinho, Vinicius' long-time musical partner. The recording brought together a stellar cast of MPB artists, with appearances by big names such as Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina, MPB-4, Alceu Valença, and Moraes Moreira, among others. The original LP cover, designed by Elifas Andreato, was a unique element: interactive, it featured figures to cut out and place inside the ark, transforming the record into a playful and tangible experience for children.
Songs
A Arca de Noé is a treasure trove of songs that became instant classics. Tracks such as "A Casa", "O Pato", "A Corujinha", "A Foca", "As Abelhas", "O Gato", "A Porta", and "O Relógio" are examples of Vinicius de Moraes' ability to transform everyday life and the animal kingdom into poetry and melody. The lyrics, full of lyricism, humour, and unique delicacy, address universal themes in an accessible and stimulating way for children. Many of these compositions, such as "A Casa", reached such a level of popularity that they began to be transmitted orally, from generation to generation, sometimes losing their authorship in popular memory and becoming incorporated into Brazilian children's folklore.
Legacy
A Arca de Noé solidified its place as one of the most important albums in Brazilian children's music, a true classic that has spanned decades and continues to enchant new generations. Its influence is vast, having shaped the musical taste of countless children and serving as a gateway to literature and MPB. The album's longevity is attested by various re-releases and reinterpretations, such as the 2013 edition, which featured the participation of contemporary MPB artists, reaffirming the timelessness of Vinicius de Moraes' compositions and his ability to engage with different eras and audiences. The album is frequently cited in lists of best records and, more than that, lives in the collective imagination, being sung and retold in homes and schools throughout Brazil.
