Why This Album Matters

The album Vinicius e Caymmi no Zum Zum is a unique record of the encounter between two of the greatest figures in Brazilian popular music, Vinicius de Moraes and Dorival Caymmi. Released in 1966 by the prestigious Elenco label, this work captured the essence of a live performance, a format that the label valued for its releases. The reunion of Vinicius, the quintessential poet of Bossa Nova, and Caymmi, the master of "canção praieira", offers a rich and multifaceted perspective on MPB. The album represents a moment of cultural effervescence, crystallising the atmosphere of the shows that became icons of the era.

Context

The album was released by the Elenco record label, founded in 1963 by Aloysio de Oliveira, a veteran of Brazilian music with three decades of experience. Oliveira, who had been part of Bando da Lua with Carmen Miranda and was artistic director at Odeon, created Elenco in response to the departure of beloved artists from his former label. Elenco emerged during a period of cultural effervescence in Brazil, still echoing the developmental euphoria of Juscelino Kubitschek's government, seeking to promote innovative musical encounters. The label quickly established itself as an avant-garde imprint, notable for launching major names in MPB and for its revolutionary visual concept on LP covers.

Recording

Vinicius e Caymmi no Zum Zum is an album that records a live performance, capturing the atmosphere of the live shows that became a hallmark of the Elenco record label. The album's title indicates that the recording took place on the renowned stage of the Zum Zum nightclub, an emblematic venue for Brazilian music at the time.

Legacy

The album Vinicius e Caymmi no Zum Zum, like other Elenco releases, left a significant mark on the history of Bossa Nova, contributing to the label's unique aesthetic identity. Its importance was reaffirmed in 2014, when Polysom, Latin America's sole manufacturer of vinyl records, included this work in a five-LP reissue box set from the defunct label. The reissue highlighted the album as a striking example of the "shows" category promoted by Elenco, solidifying its recognition as a valuable historical record of Brazilian popular music.

Dorival Caymmi: Programa Ensaio

1972

The TV Cultura programme Ensaio, filmed in 1972, welcomes Dorival Caymmi for its MPB Especial segment. The composer opens the show with his own compositions, such as "Francisca Santos das Flores", "Itapoã", "A Jangada Voltou Só", "Dois de Fevereiro", "Promessa de Pescador" and "Coqueiro de Itapoã". Following the musical opening, Caymmi talks about Salvador and his childhood. He recounts, poetically, the discovery of friendship and of Zezinho, his first friend and a great influence on his involvement with music. And, like a good storyteller, he gradually reveals the plot of a ballet for which he composed songs. Created with vocals and percussion for a Russian company touring Brazil, the acts branched out into well-known songs, such as "Canção da Noiva".
