Why This Album Matters

Decisão, released in 1969, represents a notable phase in the discography of Zimbo Trio, one of Brazil's most revered instrumental groups. This album, subtitled "Zimbo Trio + Metais", signals a characteristic sonic expansion that distinguishes this work in their catalogue. The trio, known for their mastery on Amilton Godói's piano, Luís Chaves' double bass, and Rubinho Barsotti's drums, here ventures into arrangements enriched by the presence of brass. This combination lends Decisão a broader and more dynamic texture, where the trio's rhythmic and melodic precision intertwines with the power and brilliance of the wind instruments. It is a work that solidifies Zimbo Trio's musical identity while simultaneously exploring new sonic landscapes within Brazilian instrumental music.

Context

The release of Decisão in 1969 occurred during a period of great effervescence for Zimbo Trio. Formed in March 1964 in São Paulo, the group quickly established themselves as an innovative force in instrumental music. In 1965, they gained widespread visibility by becoming the resident band for the seminal programme "O Fino da Bossa" on TV Record, presented by Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues, a crucial platform for new musical talents. Before Decisão, the trio had already demonstrated their versatility in notable collaborations, such as the anthological show in 1968 at Teatro João Caetano, alongside Elizeth Cardoso, Jacob do Bandolim, and the ensemble Época de Ouro, which generated live albums. Decisão, therefore, emerged within this setting of increasing recognition and artistic experimentation.
