Sobre Todas as Coisas

Why This Album Matters
Sobre Todas as Coisas is the eleventh studio album by singer Zizi Possi, released in 1991, and represents an undeniable milestone in her artistic career. The album is the recording of an acclaimed and successful acoustic show, which premiered in Curitiba the previous year, capturing the essence of an innovative sonic proposition. The particularity of this work lies in its minimalist and elegant instrumentation, which uses only piano, cello, and percussion. This stripped-back approach highlighted Possi's sophisticated interpretation, winning over specialised critics and establishing a new standard for her discography.
Context
After the modest reception of her previous album, Estrebucha Baby, released in 1989, Zizi Possi was facing a period of personal challenges, including her separation from Líber Gadelha, and frustrations with the promotion of her previous works by PolyGram. Given an unsatisfactory situation with the record label, the singer requested to be released from her contract. In search of new directions, Possi accepted an invitation to perform a show in Curitiba, at the Teatro Paiol, which led her to conceive a performance with minimalist arrangements, in partnership with Jetter Garotti and Marcus Suzano. The success of this initiative, which initially explored classics of Brazilian music, expanded to Rio de Janeiro, incorporating a cellist and solidifying the line-up that would give rise to the album.
Recording
The concept for the album Sobre Todas as Coisas arose from an unusual situation: an encounter between Zizi Possi and a fan who possessed an unofficial recording of the show. Inspired by this tape, the singer decided that the performance deserved to be immortalised on an album and used the 'pirate' recording to present the idea to the owner of the Eldorado record label. Despite Eldorado's financial constraints, the owner committed to covering the recording and release costs, meeting Zizi Possi's main demand: the full preservation of her ideas and the refusal to yield to any attempts to make the project more commercial. The album, therefore, faithfully reproduced the original show, which was conceived, arranged, and directed scenically and musically by the artist herself, maintaining the same musicians and the minimalist sound that characterised it.
Legacy
Sobre Todas as Coisas was received with great enthusiasm by specialised critics, who praised Zizi Possi's minimalist sound and elegant interpretations. Luiz Carlos Fetter, from the newspaper O Pioneiro, highlighted the singer's restriction to her 'vocal range' and the 'chosen musical genre', contrasting with the eclecticism of previous albums, and praised the 'unconventional' approach and 'restrained vocals'. Ricardo Ribeiro, from Tribuna da Imprensa, summarised the work as the 'perfect formula', blending 'pearls of Brazilian popular music' with 'an overdose of good vocals'. The album's success extended to official and commercial recognition. Sobre Todas as Coisas was nominated for the 1991 Prêmio Sharp in the best MPB album category and established Zizi Possi as 'Best Singer of the Year'. Commercially, the work topped the charts for best-selling MPB albums, with over 40,000 copies sold within four months of its release and reaching the milestone of 100,000 copies sold in Brazil.
